are not accurate for the prototype. The instructions suggest that the modeler may want to substitute other ladders. The included Tichy plastic ladders have eight rungs, spaced 16″, with an attached bottom stirrup. They are 20″ wide. The prototype photos show lad- ders with seven rungs, spaced 18¹/₂″, without an attached bottom stirrup. They appear about 20″ wide. HO lad- ders that are close to the prototype are Detail Associates (No. FC 6242). These were installed on the model. Corner stirrups by A-Line No. 29003 (style C) were also installed. The instructions, printed from the mini-CD, are brief and not detailed. Construction steps are not detailed or numbered. Prior experience building resin kits is assumed. Eight photos of models are printed and five photos of the prototype cars all have the shadow- keystone scheme. The instruction sheets include a diagram of the brake system of the prototype car. It is im- portant to realize that the diagram is a top-down view rather than bottom-up as a model underframe is viewed. The body casting is well-detailed

with little flash to be removed. The trust badge plate on the upper right

beside the ladder is not included on the casting. Holes must be drilled in the body ends for the six pre-formed grab irons. No weight is included in the kit. Weight can be glued on top of the un- derframe before installing it in the body.

Fine bracket grab irons are included. Molded-on tabs were removed from the body to properly install the bracket grabs. The included truck side-frames by Bowser represent PRR class 2D-F8 cast side-frame trucks commonly used on PRR X29D cars. On the review mod- el metal wheel sets were installed in the plastic side-frames. Air hoses are not included in the kit.

The review model has Hi-Tech Details hoses ( No. 6040). Coupler lift bars are not included in the kit. The review model has Detail Associates lift bars (No. 6215). PRR painted its freight cars what it

called “Freight Car Color” an oxide red, a brighter red than that used by most North American railroads. The color changed over the years. Reproducing the shade has long been debated by modelers. The review model was paint- ed with Poly Scale Zinc Chromate Primer which is said to be appropriate for the color PRR applied to its freight cars in the 1950’s according to Bob Johnson, PRR freight car modeler. Publication of color pictures often dis- torts the shade. Decals by Microscale (No. 87-1201) are appropriate and in- clude the “Don’t Stand Me Still!” slo- gan. These were installed on the re- view model so that the car appears as after 1955. PRR ball-keystone lettering for the

X29D is available from Jerry Glow. Shadow-keystone lettering for the X29D is in Microscale set No. 87-1201. This new kit from WrightTRAK will produce an accurate model of the PRR X29D appropriate for the period 1952 to the late 1970’s. The price for the kit is $49.95.—JOHN RIDDELL
