Lehigh Valley’s No. 136 is slowly pushing a cut of cars into an industrial area of town on a winter morning in New Jersey (above left). Usually known for his narrow gauge mod- eling, Paul Scoles teamed up with Walt Appel to explore a new subject in HO scale. The foam base for the diorama was shaped, painted with a base color (top), and the buildings and track test-fitted. The paving is anchor bolt cement poured into forms made from wood. After testing it on some scrap it was then used for the parking lot and loading area.

how such a scene should look. He signed on to assist and offer technical advice on the project. There was, how- ever, one proviso: it had to be a Lehigh Valley scene, due in no small part to the fact that Walt had just purchased a Bowser LV VO-1000 diesel switcher (that, and the Lehigh Valley was the lo- cal railroad where he grew up). I readi- ly agreed that we would feature the LV.

RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN

We started simply enough by gluing together pink foam pieces to form a 27″× 57″ base for a diorama. Then it was a trip to the local hobby shop to select appro- priate buildings. Two Walthers factory kits and a Woodland Scenics ready-built factory filled the bill, along with a Walthers traveling crane kit and a JL Innovation gas station kit that Walt do- nated to the project.

We also picked up some Micro Engineering code 55 flex track, but to my dismay I was told that code 55 switches were not available. I didn’t think that was right, and a check on the internet revealed a supplier in north- ern California, Railway Engineering (www.railwayeng.com). I ordered an assembled code 55 left hand No. 6 with wood ties, which arrived promptly.
