to IP66/67, the decontactors pro- vide a water tight and dust tight connection for this heavy duty operating environment that includes high levels of salt water and spray.

The design of the DS2 decon- tactors includes safety features such as a quick release button with an integral isolation switch, which makes it possible for the maintenance team to quickly and safely connect and discon- nect power, even under load, and without the need for a quali- fied electrician. The connection is water tight as soon as the plug is inserted into the socket, and the socket outlet is water tight when the lid is closed.

OUT DATED, HARD wired ground box connections on the quay side cranes at the Port of Liverpool have recently been replaced by Marechal’s DS2 decontactors. The decontactors help to improve electrical safety whilst also minimising down-time and maintenance costs. With sealing

Gary Holcroft, engineering assets manager at the Port of Liverpool, added, “The auxil- iary contacts in the DS2 decon- tactors have given us the flexibility to add electrical inter- locks, which prevent accidental or malicious disconnection, and have also allowed us to add earth leakage circuit breakers.” www.marechal.com

A NEW GUIDE for contractors to help avoid common pitfalls when ordering cable has been launched following a collaboration between the Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA). The guide aims to help contrac- tors by way of a ten point reminder of the key requirements when placing an order for electri- cal cables.

The ten point Code of Practice for contractors prompts the con- tractor to include the following information when completing a purchase order:

Peter Smeeth of the Approved Cables Initiative said, “By developing this guide we aim to make better cable ordering practice a habit rather than an occasional activity. If contractors follow this process they will stand a greater chance of receiving a cable product that meets the required specification and rel- evant standard and won’t let them down.”

Copies of the guide have already been mailed to more than 3,000 ECA members. The guide is also available to download at www.aci.org.uk or alternatively a hard copy can be gained by emailing marketing@eca.co.uk. www.aci.org.uk / www.eca.co.uk
