Micro-Epsilon has introduced its new optoNCDT 1700BL series of Blue Laser Sensors which operate on the laser triangulation measur- ing principle and use blue (violet) laser technology. The sensors are well suited for measurements on hot, glowing metals, particularly in hot steel processing applications, as well as for measuring organic materials such as skin, foodstuffs, plastics, veneers and wood. With red, glowing objects, a conventional red laser has a high sig- nal interference from the object surface, because it emits the same or very near wavelengths of light as the red laser. However, the blue laser works at a wavelength of 405nm, which is far from the red part of the visible spectrum. This means it is easier to filter this type of emitted light from the object, which ensures very stable signals. This is a particular advantage when it comes to measuring the wear or deformation of automotive brake discs under load, and also when measuring against translucent objects such as organ- ic materials, paper, some plastics and wood veneers. Unlike a red laser, the blue laser light does not penetrate into the measuring object because it has a lower intensity laser spot and therefore offers more stable, precise measurements on targets that con- ventional red laser sensors have difficulty measuring. Micro-Epsilon’s Blue Laser Sensors are equipped with new high end optical lenses, a new intelligent laser control and eval- uation algorithms. The sensors are suitable for red glowing met- als up to 1,600°C, and for silicon up to 1,150°C. The optoNCDT 1700BL operates using the laser triangulation prin- ciple. New IR sensors
A new collaboration between ULIS and technology research centre, CEA/Leti, has been launched to develop a new line of infrared (IR) sensors.
The new line of IR sensors is designed to suit applications seeking to achieve maximum effi- ciency in the everyday use of energy, for example heating sys- tems. Existing single element IR sensors (pyroelectric sensors), like those used in buildings to detect motion, lack the techno- logical capability and quantity of pixels to provide complex data. This includes an inability of these single element sensors to detect the number of people in a room, particularly if those pre- sent are immobile.
The energy saving applications ULIS will target for the new IR sen- sors include improving the man- agement of heating, cooling and lighting systems, as well as people flow in public places. The products will also be suitable for security (access control and surveillance), safety (fire detection), and health- care (infrared endoscopy). The IR sensor project is sched- uled to run for four years. Within this period, ULIS plans to have pro- totypes as well as finished products ready and available on the market. ULIS

If the target changes position with respect to the sensor, the movement of the reflected light is projected on the CCD array and analysed to output the exact position of the target. The measurements are processed digitally in the integral controller. The data is output via analogue (I/U) and digital interface RS422 or USB. The optoNCDT 1700BL series includes six sensor models with measuring ranges from 20mm up to 1,000mm. The measuring rate of the sensor can be adjusted up to 2.5kHz and can be used as a freely programmable limit switch. Maximum linearity is 16mm and maximum resolution is 1.5mm at 2.5kHz (without any averaging). Now available in the UK and Ireland from Variohm EuroSensor is the new RSM2800 series of non-contacting, multi-turn rotary sensors from Novotechnik. The new offering provides an absolute position output for up to 16 turns (5760 electrical degrees), and is a true non- volatile device that retains position in an unpowered state.
The RSM2800 is aimed at a variety of appli- cations throughout industry, agriculture, construc- tion and automotive - from steering angle detection in cars and trucks or mobile machinery, to valve and flap positioning in industrial processing, and as a low cost absolute feedback system for servo controls. It is also suitable for applications where its ability to provide multi-turn absolute position measurement after a power failure is desirable or where a power-up homing routine is not feasible.
The magneto-resistive technology used in the RSM2800 combines angle and turn detec- tion elements, and the device has a nomi- nal housing diameter of 30mm, a high resilience to shock and vibration and a temperature range from -40°C to 85°C. In addition to the selectable number of turns, from two to 16, the new RSM2800 angle sensor is available with a range of con- figuration options including a choice of 5 or 24V DC power supply, ratiometric, voltage or current outputs, cw or ccw output curve, dual redundant outputs and shielded cable or M12 connectors.
The packaging options include a choice of flatted or marked 6mm diameter stainless steel output shafts, with sealed housings to IP54, IP65 or IP67. Variohm EuroSensor

Increasing precision with magnetostrictive level sensors For use in a range of OEM and end user
applications, Gems Sensors & Controls has launched its new range of magnetostrictive level sensors. The stainless steel XT-1000 sensors offer continuous level measure- ment in lengths from 20cm to over 4m. The XT-1000 measures liquid media lev- els using the complete probe length and is largely unaffected by temperature. The sen- sor offers constant sensing of fluid level regardless of the physical state of the media including bubbles, foam, condensa- tion, precipitation, pressure, temperature or changes in density.

The counter consists of a spe- cialised D12 expert sensor paired with preconfigured PFVCA fibre optic arrays, creating a two dimen- sional sensing field in which objects are readily detected upon breaking any point of the array. This makes alignment easier and object positioning control less crit- ical than with traditional, single point emitters and receiver fibre optic assemblies.
