I had the pleasure of flying my Nesmith Cougar in the noon demo with Paul Weigand, who was flying his 1937 Culver Dart. His Dart started life as a gas model built in the 1980s, claiming many scale awards. Paul decided to change the Dart’s power system to an AXI 5345 controlled by a Castle Creations Phoenix ICE HV160 ESC on a 10S Li-Po pack with a total weight of 37 pounds. The Dart’s detailing was exquisite with flight performance to match. On the smaller side of things, Bret Beck-


er’s scratchbuilt Electrolyte with fiberglass fuse looked as if someone had shrunk down a BVM jet model. Wingspan is 20 inches; wing area, 65 square inches; length, 24 inches and weight, 12 ounces. Power system consists of a custom made 40mm shroud AEO R/C rotor, Neu 705 2Y (7400Kv) motor, Thunder Power RC 3S 1320 mAh Li-Po and Castle Phoenix 25-amp controller. The mod- el was launched via a bungee and did it move! A bright color scheme was a necessi- ty on this EDF hotrod. The popular warbird mass launches were


held Friday and Saturday afternoon. The sky was crowded and Tom had the martial Wagner music playing. It was a great sight and lots of fun to fly in.

Project wrap-up The Nesmith Cougar, built from Vince


Miller plans sold by Calvin’s Classic Plan Service, was an enjoyable build of an air- craft usually modeled in peanut scale. Well- drawn plans made for fast construction and very little flight trim needed beyond what was stated on the plans. The Cougar per- formed well at NEAT. The power system was run harder than in past flights due to the windy conditions with all components remaining cool.


Wing span is 62 inches; wing area, 740 ;square inches; weight, 7.75 pounds; wing loading, 15 ounces/square foot. The motor is a NEO 60-410 from Cermark Products (www.cermark.com); the controller is a Cas- tle Phoenix ICE 75 (www.castlecreations. com); the battery, a Thunder Power RC G6 Pro Lite 4400 mAh 25C; the spinner, a Tru Turn (www.truturn.com) electric hub and spinner anodized red. Servos are Hitec (www.hitecrcd.com) HS 5245s Digital/Pro- grammable that output 61-ounce torque. Hardware and wheels come from Sullivan Products (www.sullivanproducts.com).
