Tauck Of The Town T

heir latest move coincided with the launch of their newest vessel, the five-star rated MS Treasures, in

Cologne, Germany, in August – the fourth in the past five years. Robin Tauck, the ship’s godmother and

granddaughter of company founder Arthur Tauck, Sr, officially welcomed Treasures into Tauck’s fleet during a traditional christening ceremony, with celebratory music provided by a local pipe and drum band and fountains of water sent skyward by a nearby fireboat. Company CEO Dan Mahar explained:

“Today’s christening marks a very special moment in the growth and evolution of our river cruising efforts. Welcoming a beautiful new ship into our fleet is always

a wonderful occasion, but today we’re also celebrating being named the ‘World’s Best River Cruise Line’ by Travel + Leisure magazine, as well as the first departures of two new cruises on the Rhone.” As on its other riverboats, Tauck has created an intimate, club-like atmosphere by limiting its capacity to just 118 guests, compared to 140 or more on other ships of similar size. The Treasures boasts 14 spacious, 300sq ft suites, each equipped with walk-in closets and marble baths with full-size tubs. The ship also has seven junior suites and 38 cabins (183 and 150sq ft, respec- tively), and all suites, junior suites and cabins feature new décor and bedding that Tauck has added fleet-wide for 2011, as well as plasma TVs, mini-bars, terrycloth robes and slippers, radios, safes, adjustable air conditioning and L’Occitane toiletries. Some 85% of all accommodations have

floor-to-ceiling windows and French balconies for enhanced appreciation of the passing scenery, while there is also a gym, outdoor Jacuzzi, restaurant, lounge, boutique, massage studio and a second, more casual dining venue in the ship’s Lido Bar.

American luxury cruise-tour company TAUCK are offering their European river cruises to the UK market for the first time, opening up yet more distinctive choice in the ever-growing – and quality-conscious – world of small-ship voyaging.

Mahar added: “It’s worth remembering

the Travel + Leisure award is based on six criteria that encompass far more than just amenities. Besides being scored on cabins and food, we were rated on service, value, itineraries and activities. That really speaks to the different elements that make up a Tauck river cruise experience, and we work incredibly hard to excel at them all.” Tauck offers a dozen itineraries, including two new Rhone River cruises introduced in 2011. The portfolio also includes a Danube River cruise specifically for families and two December Christmas market cruises introduced in 2010. Itineraries are offered on the Danube, Rhine, Rhone, Main, Maas and Saone rivers, plus the Albert Canal, with cruise-only prices from $3,290 (8-day Danube cruise) to $17,690 (full suite, 24-day trans-European cruise).
