A
Photographs (the History Press, £25, hardback) is the colourful story in postcards of illustrious White Star, including personal postcards and messages from passengers, crew and troops. The White Star Line was originally founded in Liverpool in 1845 to provide passage to Australia before Thomas Ismay purchased and transformed the identity and goodwill of the line into the successful Oceanic Steam Navigation Co. Cleverly working in partnership with Harland & Wolff, the line focused on luxury over speed, building many of the world’s most famous vessels: Oceanic, Titanic, Olympic, Britannic and Majestic. Finally merging with its great rival Cunard during the 1930s Depression, the companies still retained their original names and company colours while flying one another’s flags below their own. The new book covers the careers and alternative identities
of the vessels in peacetime and at war, as well as containing unusual stories, such as the planned escape of Dr Crippen and his fateful journey on board Montrose. It also showcases a wide variety of interior views, advertisements and menus, plus many previously unpublished and rare postcards. Author Mylon has spent his working life in the travel industry and became captivated by Titanic after seeing the film A Night to Remember in 1958. He began what would become a lifetime’s hobby collecting White Star memorabilia and purchased his first postcard in 1983. Now he has a collection of more than 4,000 items and is a member of various societies connected with the Titanic and the White Star Line.
