Tanzania AFRICA'S PRIDE
Tanzania should be on the bucket list of most clients! This spectacular country is home to Africa’s highest mountain, the world’s most dramatic animal migration, a volcanic crater brimming with game and lagoons clear enough to watch sea turtles, says Jo Austin
T
anzania has a self-crafted reputation for being upmarket and exclusive and it certainly
lives up to it. Visitors can be reassured that their
safari vehicle will not be one of hundreds in the game parks and that their accommodation will be stunning. Travel within the country will be by
small or private jet and the safari guide will certainly be able to tell a gerenuk from a Grant’s. First-timers to Tanzania will enjoy the
popular northern circuit which takes in the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Serengeti. Along with a beach holiday on the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar, this makes the perfect combination at almost any time of year.
Carrier Tours has added the Elewana SkySafari to its 2012
programme to give clients the
opportunity to see the region in its entirety with the help of a nine-seater plane.
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of
nature’s gifts and although visitors can no longer camp in the crater itself there are a number of luxury lodges around its rim. The massive conservation area is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and is a huge draw card for visitors who can see nearly every one of Africa’s wild creatures in one huge cauldron. Another big draw is Mount Kilimanjaro, most often in the news for its celebrity climbers. The mountain
itself might soon
become a celebrity as it has been nominated as a
candidate for ‘seven natural
great wonders of the world’. If your clients are not into climbing the mountain they might enjoy a stay on the slopes between Mount Kili and Mount Meru. Kamali Safaris features two special bush lodges on its Kilimanjaro Safari Circuit. Hatari Lodge is styled in keeping with the 1960s Howard Hawks film of the same name and Shu’mata Camp features five luxury tents at the foot of the mountain. For the more experienced traveller to Africa, a luxury mobile safari or a walking safari in the remote Selous Game Reserve or Ruaha give a true
wilderness experience. While the Selous does not offer the big five, the Reserve is the biggest in Africa and about four times the size of Serengeti. It claims to be home to the largest elephant concentration in the world and walking with a guide is the best way to observe them. Family-run Mwagusi Camp in Ruaha is proving very popular with the UK market. East African hotel group Serena Hotels manages two properties in the reserve. Selous Luxury Camp is a 45-inute flight from Dar es Salaam and features 12 huge safari tents in the
