L. S. Starrett Company Sponsors U.K. Carpentry Entrant At World Skills 2011
The L. S. Starrett Company is delighted to be providing tools for Joe Price, the sole U.K. representative in the Carpentry competition at the World Skills event this October.
An apprentice to Shropshire building and joinery contractors
J.R.Slee, Joe has been through several stages and weeks of intensive training to win the right to represent the U.K. at the competition.
The process began in March of 2010 when Joe was chosen by Shrewsbury College as their entrant for Skillbuild, a regional skills competition involving 20 carpenters. First place here was followed up by an invitation to a short listing event for UK Skills, and after a number of events Joe was one of three carpenters invited to join the U.K. squad. The squad were put through their paces at a number of different venues, culminating in June 2011 when Joe was confirmed as the sole U.K. representative for carpentry at World Skills London 2011. Over its 60 year history, WorldSkills International has come to symbolise the pinnacle of excellence in vocational training. Every two years hundreds of young skilled people, accompanied by their teachers and trainers, gather together from around the world to compete before the public in the skills of their various trades and test themselves against demanding international standards. They represent the best of their peers drawn from regional and national skill competitions held currently in 52 countries.
John Cove, Marketing Manager for Starrett, said ‘When Joe approached us we were highly impressed by his obvious talent and enthusiasm for carpentry. Not only has he qualified as the U.K. representative for World Skills 2011, which is a huge achievement in itself, Joe is also the National Advanced Apprentice of the Year. We are absolutely delighted to be providing him with tools and we wish him every success in the competition!

Magma: A Big ‘Hit’ The hearts of the nation’s tradesmen were all of a flutter this month, as the C.K Magma Hit Squad made its way to construction sites and trade counters across the country. But surprisingly, it wasn’t the gorgeous girls that caught the eyes of tradesmen and merchants – it was the new C.K Magma range of premium storage and PPE equipment they were promoting.
The second tranche of the brand’s explosive marketing campaign, the C.K Magma Hit Squad made its way across the country, showcasing the highly functional C.K Magma product range and guaranteeing enthusiastic footfall for stockists and boosting profits.
The Hit Squad team met with thousands of tradesmen over the four days, and placed the products directly in their hands. As well as demonstrating the many benefits and qualities of the range, C.K Magma also teamed up with designated merchants in the local area to offer a one–day 25% discount, to encourage tradesmen into stores.
The consensus over the week was that the C.K Magma range was very different from anything the tradesmen had ever seen, with one describing it as the ‘most visually pleasing range’ on the market. One customer purchased a technician’s tool case after his son, a fellow electrician, had recommended it to him. When asked what he thought of the product after purchase, he described it, simply, as a ‘knock-out’.

With Welding Electrodes Following its acquisition in 2006 of ISO 14001 certification for its approach to welding products manufacture and environmental practices, the ESAB Group has continuously reviewed its methods to reduce environmental impact. The company has recognised that some of the dyes used to colour electrode coatings can be environmentally detrimental.
The decision has therefore been made to remove the green dye used in the coating of the Murex branded Vortic Marine welding electrode. This dye is purely a recognition feature and does not contribute to the welding performance and properties of the product.
The coating colour is being changed to grey and the new colour electrodes will be seen as stocks become available through distribution channels.
