Fein ASCT5 Cordless Driver Independent Review by Peter Brett


We have all got used to the cut-throat pricing of power tools made possible by the internet and by Far Eastern bulk manufacture. But what do you do as a smaller, but highly respected, German manufacturer in order to compete in the market? The Fein solution is to add so much value, sophistication and quality design to the product that tools’ merits are such that the extra productivity, reliability and sheer ease of use of them will persuade new customers to invest in them and existing customers to stick by them. Fein is still probably most well known for its amazing range of oscillating tools, the MultiMaster, so it certainly has some street cred in the power tool department. The Fein ASCT 5-40M cordless screw gun is not one I have come across much because it is quite a niche product – a collated drywall screwdriver. Vital in the specialized world of drywalling, but probably not much recognized outside of it.


The set I was sent for test arrived in the justly respected Fein orange case which features robust plastic outer case with big hinges and proper metal latches. Inside,


a custom fitted polystyrene inner holds the tool perfectly in place with dedicated spaces for charger, spare battery and accessories. The screw gun, as presented in the case, is rather strange-looking with the collated screw head already in place. It took me a short while to work out how to separate all the constituent parts, but doing so just lets you get to know the tool better and start to appreciate some of its qualities.
