— but you can see the level of competition increasing in all of the categories,” she said, adding that the increase in competition requires everyone to push the limits in their training and race preparation. She sees a shift in the athletes, noting that they are not in it just to finish, but to be competitive and win. This will also apply nearing the 2016 Paralympic Games, which will feature the sport of paratriathlon for the first time. “To be able to have that for our sport is just tremendous,” said Bassett, who is already setting goals to compete in Rio. “Moving forward, it’s only going to get bigger.” She also thinks that athletes from other Paralympic sports may try their hand in paratriathlon in order to make the Paralympic team.

Games, Bassett has made other plans. She is currently aiming to make the U.S. Paralympic Track and Field team in the 100m and 200m events. This will be a new challenge, but won’t replace triathlon — Bassett still plans to compete in paratriathlon at the national and world levels in 2012. “Don’t worry,” she said. “I know where my roots are.”
