JAYBIRD FREEDOM 3 ($99;
jaybirdgear.com) PREMISE: To keep you entertained and in touch during extended weekend treks, the JF3’s wireless earbuds are fully sweatproof with three different ear cushions for a customizable fit. The hexagon design keeps these buds snug in your ear, while the Bluetooth compatible microphone lets you take calls on the run so you can stay in touch while you train – but only if you want to.
TESTERS SAY: They do everything they claim and more. The three customizable ear cushions meant that everyone had a perfect fit that didn’t irritate the ear, even on long runs. And they were up to the task on sweaty, concentrated workouts as well. Laura took the JF3’s to a few CrossFit sessions and reported that they remained stable during even the most intense exercises. The only complaint was about the six-hour battery, which didn’t quite live up to expectations, and Tony said that the initial set-up was a bit confusing. But the sound quality of these wireless headsets surprised everyone, particularly the bass. “It became a challenge getting them to come loose,” Tony said about the JF3’s. “They’re a great fit with amazing sound.” RATING: 4.25

GU CHOMPS ($35 for 16;
guenergy.com) PREMISE: A quick shot of energy without the mess of a gel, Chomps provide the same nutrition that has powered GU products for years in a chewable form. Four Chomps are equivalent to one gel packet, and they come in six caffeinated and caffeine- free flavors.
TESTERS SAY: With its semi-solid consistency, the Chomps were great fuel for long, steady workouts. Laura loved
the caffeinated Apple Cranberry flavor, and athletes reported feeling the nutritional benefits within 15 minutes — not bad for a semi-solid. The main gripe was the awkward packaging which most found too cumbersome on the bike, making the Chomps a good- tasting option for those seeking a gel- alternative to fuel those long training runs. RATING: 4.5
