Changing the perception of modular buildings
New school building
A new sixth form centre has arrived on site at Wymondham High School in Norfolk. The scheme has been constructed using a highly sustainable recycled modular building from Foremans Relocatable Building Systems.
arrives on site
Designed by architects NPS Group, the purpose-designed facility was craned into position in just one day during the school holidays to minimise disruption to staff and students. The main contractor is Farrans (Construction) Ltd.
The single storey building will provide five seminar rooms for students studying a range of social science subjects, and sixth form facilities, including a break-out area, toilets and administration office. The project marks the start of an exciting phase in the school’s development. In line with Government policy to increase the number of academies across the UK, Wymondham High School will take on Academy status from Autumn 2011.
The additional teaching accommodation is needed as the school caters for over 1,600 pupils, with 400 in the sixth form from the start of the new academic year. By 2025, the Academy’s capacity will increase to 2,000 pupils.
Commenting on the project, Victoria Musgrave, Head Teacher at Wymondham High School said, “This project will provide a high quality educational environment which will help to symbolise the start of a new era for the school and contribute to our aim of becoming a centre for academic excellence in the region. The recycled modular approach from Foremans will give us the very best scheme for our available budget and is sufficiently flexible to meet our specific building requirements.” Tel: 01964 544344.

24 feature :: portable & modular buildings
Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular building specialist, has launched a new video as part of its campaign to change the perception of modular buildings and to demonstrate just what is possible with this highly innovative and flexible approach to providing interim accommodation. This latest video illustrates how buildings can be provided to manufacturing and commercial organisations that: • Can easily accommodate more than 1,000 staff
• Are manufactured to permanent building standards and in line with the latest Building Regulations
• Feature floor to ceiling glazing to maximise natural light for an attractive and productive working environment
• Use a technically advanced building system with no internal columns for ease of space planning
• Are available in single and multi- storey configurations to meet specific project requirements. Commenting on this latest initiative,
Mike Williams, General Manager of Portakabin Hire, said, “Our research has shown that many organisations, particularly in the manufacturing and commercial sectors, are just not aware of how far modular buildings have come in recent years and of the scale, design flexibility and quality of the office environments that are now available – and for interim as well as permanent use.” Applications for interim solutions are diverse and include open plan office accommodation, security buildings, canteens, meeting rooms, training suites, and project offices. The buildings can be supplied and installed in just days from receipt of order and can remain in use for as long as required. Modular accommodation can also be easily extended, reconfigured or relocated to meet changing business needs. To view the new video, visit

Modular building suppliers should comply with Building Regulations 2010
Foremans Relocatable Building Systems is urging construction clients to check all modular building suppliers comply with Building Regulations Part L2A 2010 requirements.
According to Kevin Jones, Managing Director of Foremans, “It has become apparent that some modular building suppliers are struggling to comply with the revised Building Regulations Part L2A and also that not all are understanding the requirement to provide Energy Performance Certificates on completion of every project.”
“All buildings supplied by Foremans are fully L2A 2010 compliant. However, as an industry, there is clearly work to do to raise standards and ensure all projects, regardless of supplier, are delivered in line with the new legislation.”
Foremans is also advising construction clients to ensure that they are comparing tenders for modular buildings that are like for like and that they check suppliers’ track record of previous Part L 2010 compliant buildings. This will help them avoid being hit by unforeseen costs post-completion and potential time delays for Building Regulations compliance.
The Modular and Portable Building Building & Facilities Management – September 2011
Association (MPBA) has recently published new guidance for modular building suppliers about Part L 2010 compliance. This is also a valuable source of information for construction clients and facilities managers, helping them to be more informed when specifying and procuring modular buildings. For further information, see
www.MPBA.biz In the case of pre-owned modular buildings, Foremans also recommends clients ask for proof of age of the building. As the UK’s largest supplier of recycled Portakabin buildings, these modules all have serial numbers and so are fully traceable, but that is not always the case with modular buildings from other sources.
