BDR Thermea adds ‘THINK’ technology
BDR Thermea has announced a series of key advances to its range of high efficiency boilers for the specification sector. Both its Baxi Megalflo Compact System and Baxi Duo-tec range of boilers now feature innovative ‘THINK’ combustion management technology as part of a number of developments which optimise reliability, efficiency and cost savings in new-build and social housing applications.
“The advanced ‘THINK’ combustion management system is a significant breakthrough in boiler technology” explains BDR Thermea’s Specification Channel Manager, Simon Osborne. “It includes Gas Adaptive Control, which constantly manages combustion to ensure the boiler works at the optimum setting at all times”.
He adds, “This intelligent control also automatically recognises whether the boiler is working with natural gas or LPG during the set up processes and commissions itself accordingly. ‘THINK’ will ensure that boilers from the Baxi Megaflo Compact System and Baxi Duo- tec range operate at optimum efficiency settings for the lifetime of an installation”. Among the other changes to the Baxi Megaflo Compact System range are new cupboard fit dimensions (excluding the
32kW model) and an increased choice of outputs to meet the demands of all property sizes. The boiler also includes a two speed pump, which switches to a lower speed as the heat demand is met, saving on electricity and reducing noise in the pipes. The Baxi Duo-tec is also available in a broad range of outputs making it also suitable for all sized houses. It offers a wide modulation range of 1:7, enabling the boiler to match output with heat demand, saving on fuel, reducing NOx and carbon dioxide emissions. Specifying boilers from either product range can help developers seeking to meet Levels 3 and 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) on their schemes. Both ranges are compatible with the Multifit GasSaver passive flue gas heat recovery device which enhances operating efficiency still further. There is also a comprehensive range of accessories available from BDR Thermea to ease specification and installation, including new flue options, ridge tile terminals and a condensate and pressure relief valve pump.

Skelmersdale tenants look forward to an energy efficient future
The tenants of 42 warden-assisted flats owned by West Lancashire Borough Council, are looking forward to enjoying reliable, energy-efficient heating thanks to the installation of a number of Ecodan® air source heat pumps which provide them with low carbon, renewable energy. In a move to increase the energy rating for the flats in Beechwood Court, Birkrig, Skelmersdale, the Council has replaced its old heating system which was run on a number of direct electric heaters connected to an ‘Economy 7’ circuit, with Mitsubishi Electric’s energy efficient, Ecodan system.
Following a review of the old system the Council called in approved Ecodan
installers, Dalliam Ltd, to advise on an energy-efficient, cost-effective, low carbon replacement. Taking into account energy calculations from a survey of the building, Dalliam’s Managing Director, Bill Tyrer, and his team set about designing a new system.
Ecodan units were fitted to the outside wall of the flats, from where they harvest renewable low grade energy from the air and upgrade it into a heat supply which is then used to provide both heating and hot water to the properties.
“We know that people are often afraid to use their heating because of the cost, but these residents are vulnerable and need to keep warm when the weather conditions are poor. Our priority was to provide them with a reliable, effective heating and hot water system that was also affordable,” said Bill Tyrer, Managing Director of Dalliam Ltd. “The new system not only provides that, but has also lowered both the energy rating and the carbon emissions for the building, thereby fulfilling the Council’s brief.
One 5kW Ecodan unit was installed for every two flats, providing heat via a

radiator circuit fitted with independent lockable heating stats and thermostatic radiator valves, further helping to save energy costs.
A 14kW Ecodan unit has also been installed to provide heating and domestic hot water to the warden’s accommodation and the communal dining area, and hot water for use in the kitchen, hair salon and guest rooms.
The replacement project has been carried out over several months and some of the units that were installed towards the end of last winter have already been given a thorough testing with the onset of bitterly cold weather, which saw temperatures dipping down as far -17C degrees. During this time, however, the tenants remained warm and cosy as the new system maintained a constant temperature of + 24 C degrees.
