My Diary: Dominic Harrison
Dominic Harrison, chief executive of Business In Sport & Leisure (BISL), conducts a whirlwind tour of his month ahead.
S
eptember is a critical month for me both on and off the pitch! From a professional perspective BISL is progressing on a number of important fronts which will enhance the organisation’s ability to represent the sport and leisure industry it serves and fight the very impor- tant battles which lie ahead. On the pitch, it’s an equally hectic time for Tony Pulis’s red and white army as my team, Stoke City, progress in their debut season playing in Europe. BISL’s very own Cup Final takes place on 10 November when we hold our Annual Confer- ence, which I am delighted to say is once again being sponsored by Sky, at Lords Cricket Ground and in the process celebrate our 25th anniversary. As anyone who has staged a major conference will no doubt testify, it’s all in the plan- ning. It’s now a case of fort- nightly face-to-face meetings with the team to confirm speakers, the timetable, eve of confer- ence dinner, the confer- ence video, delegate sales - the list appears endless. This year our theme is ‘Leisure Works’ and our speaker list includes some of the best known and respected names in the sector including Sir David Michels, deputy chairman of Easy Jet and Marks Spencers - just two of the many companies he serves. Sir David, of course, launched Lad- brokes as a stand- alone public
best marketing campaign of the year. There will also be a cate-
gory recognising the con- tribution made by the gaming media as well as an individual accolade for outstanding contribu- tion/service to the industry. An independent panel of influential judges will delib- erate and decide upon each award category.

company. We have also secured the shadow minis- ter for gambling Ivan Lewis MP, Adam Boulton, politi- cal editor at Sky News and Sally Hancock, Lloyds Banking Group’s director of Olympic marketing and sponsorship. It promises to be a great event with more speakers to follow. In tandem with the confer- ence we are also launching a new corporate identity and I have meetings sched- uled with our design agency to finalise the launch. It will be a new look BISL in more ways than one. As the only organisa- tion taking the strategic arguments of the sport and leisure industry to govern- ment we will be adopting a more campaigning stance fighting the big issues of the day on behalf of our members. I’m pleased to say BISL’s representation in the gambling sector is very strong and we will be campaigning to give gam- bling companies a much better deal from the Coali- tion Government.
