What is the new gTLD Program?

The new gTLD program is an initiative that will enable the intro- duction of new gTLDs into the domain name space. This will allow firms to have new suffixes on their web addresses, such as .bet or .win instead of .com. ICANN antici- pates a de- mand for

Catch me if you can

profile examples of imperson- ation fraud. The Stephen Spielberg block- buster movie ‘Catch me if you can’ was based on the life of serial impersonation fraudster Frank Abagnale Jr, who carried out cheque fraud by impersonating people such as airline pilots, doctors and lawyers. The way we interact with customers today demands faster, more remote trans- actions which present highly attractive op- portunities for impersonation fraud. No longer does a fraudster have to adopt a high risk impersonation strategy such as those used by Frank Abagnale Jr, today it can all be done electronically from the safety of your home that enables the fraudster to detach any emotion from the criminal act itself. The gaming sector in particular presents an attractive draw to fraudsters who use techniques such impersonation fraud to take over a person’s account and draw down funds or load accounts with stolen cards that do not belong to them. Conse- quently, it is now more important than ever that operators within the gaming sector have robust fraud detection tools at their disposal which will determine whether a customer is genuine and that any card they choose to use is verified against the user.

If you could remove this type of fraud, imagine the effect it would have on your business? The savings could be used to de- velop new products, win more customers through marketing, improve customer sat- isfaction or simply recognise it to your bot- tom line. Callcredithas developed a range of prod- ucts designed to help the gaming sector re- duce fraud such as CallValidate which vali- dates a customer’s identity and uniquely links it to credit/debit cards and bank ac- counts of that individual so you can be satis- fied that you are dealing with a genuine cus- tomer using their own payment details to- gether with over 70 fraud checks that can be configured to ensure you don’t cause legiti- mate, good and honest customers unneces- sary inconvenience.

Our latest development within CallVali-

date proposition is ‘Ownership Fraud Alert’ which feeds back a range of fraud warnings about the ownership of the card such as highlighting the occasions when the card belongs to a different identity at a different address to the one presented with the trans- action.

In a fast changing world where would-be fraudsters are becoming ever more sophis- ticated in the ways in which they try to mas- termind fraud, it is imperative that those who might be targeted, such as those within the

How much will it cost?

The evaluation fee is estimated at US$185,000 (£113,000). Applicants will be required to pay a $5,000 (£3,000) deposit fee per requested application slot when registering, which will be credited against the evaluation fee. Applicants may be required to pay additional fees in certain cases where specialised process steps are applicable.

Can I simply reserve a gTLD for later?

No. ICANN expects all new gTLDs to be operational. gTLDs are expected to be delegated within one year of signing a registry agreement. ICANN does not accept reserva- tions or pre-registrations based on trademarks. But registries will be required to operate sunrise or in- tellectual property claims services for the protection of trademarks.

What happens if there are multiple applications for the same string?

It is not feasible for two or more identical strings to occupy the inter- net space. Each name must be unique. If there are two or more ap- plications for the same string (or confusingly similar strings), the String Contention procedures would come into effect.
