I recognize, however, many individ-

uals are less comfortable with round- gun technology and prefer an auto pistol. That’s all well and good. Some fine examples of small, thin autoload- ers chambered for service cartridges include the various Kahr pistols, Tau- rus 709 Slim and Walther PPS.

ing the lowest possible profile is high on my list of priorities. In the cooler months, my primary handgun rides in a strong side hip holster, under- neath a covering garment. My BUG is stashed away in a holster carried in the support-side hip pocket. If hot weather or social settings make a cov- ering garment impractical, I might carry one gun in the pocket and the other on the ankle. Some may question the position-

On the job, my duty holster blocked access to my strong- side pocket and I didn’t have any oth- er option but to take the gun to the other side. Depending on placement of other gear, drawing from the sup- port side wasn’t especially pretty or fast, but was still more efficient than drawing from the ankle. If I needed to access my BUG during a disarm at- tempt, this was well within the realm of possibility. The slight degradation in marksmanship shooting with the support hand was a fair trade-off for quicker access. For any number of reasons, ankle

carry is less than optimal for a pri- mary handgun. It can be very quick from a seated position or if you find yourself on the ground. If you carry a handgun on the ankle, you really need to refine that draw stroke (watch the
