hear bad news related to guns, espe- cially if kids are involved. How many times a year does the media report an incident of a misguided kid taking a gun to school? Then there are tragic situations when one of these unstable youths actually uses a gun against someone. Does this mean we should keep all kids away from guns? Should we ban cars since some people choose to drive drunk? People often ask if it is safe to teach kids to use guns. My answer is it’s more dangerous not to. According to the National Center

for Health Statistics, firearm acci- dent deaths have been decreasing for years. In fact, the odds are more than one million to one against a child dy- ing in a firearm related death in the US. Many believe these odds decrease even greater for kids who are taught firearm safety at an early age.


How Early? When is the right time to introduce

So, are they more capable or less capable of being trusted and making good decisions? Spend enough years in law enforcement and you quickly see this as a truth. Sure, there are exceptions here and there, but if you have kids doing bad things, it can usually be traced back to their home life. Armed with this knowledge, only

Going hunt- ing and shooting are part of some of my earliest memories. We were taught to respect guns and handle them safe- ly before we were ever allowed to han- dle them by ourselves.
