uns and knives go together. If you look around at people who carry handguns for personal

protection, more often than not you will also fi nd them carrying a knife of some sort. And, if you ask them, they’ll often claim they carry that knife as a defensive weapon, just like their gun. Unfortunately, in my expe- rience, many of the people who make this claim have never actually done any training in knife tactics and have not given serious thought to how the knife actually fi ts into their personal- protection tactics.

Even of you have taken the initiative to seek

If you are most comfortable using both weapons with your dominant hand, your best bet is to carry them close to each other so your drawstrokes for each are as similar as possible. Here, a 5 o’clock IWB carry of a handgun is well paired with a 3 o’clock carry of a fi xed-blade knife.

If you’re going to car- ry a knife and a gun for personal defense, you need to sort out your carry and deploy- ment strategies for each and back them with sound training.

out knife training, there are still many things you need to consider when integrating it into your self-defense plan. This article is intended to guide you through the logical process of in- tegrating knife and gun to help you create a sound plan that makes sense for you.

Lefty, Righty Or Both? One of the fi rst things you need to consider

is whether you are left or right-handed in your use of your handgun and your knife. Most people will favor the same hand for both, but for some it will be different. Statistically, most people are right-handed

and are more comfortable shooting and wield- ing a contact weapon with their right hand. Since those statistics also include the bad guys, you should consider that most of the at- tackers you will potentially face will also be right-handed. And since most contact-weapon attacks consist of natural, gross-motor-skill movements (i.e. forehand swings or centerline thrusts), your knife tactics will work best if applied with your right hand. Effective left vs. right knife tactics are certainly possible, but if you’re capable of using a knife righty, it will give you an advantage.

Open, Concealed Or Both? Another thing you need to consider is

whether you carry your gun openly, concealed or both. Armed professionals and civilians who choose or are required to carry openly,
