A kid-size .22 and a Bog-Pod for when they graduate from the bench.
my gunsmith cut the barrel to 16" and re-install the front sight. I then cut the stock down by shortening the fore-end, chopping the butt stock and shaving down the sides to thin it a bit. Finally, I refinished the metal using Brownells Aluma-Hyde II in semi- gloss black. This stuff is great for home gunsmithing. It’s easy to apply, dries quickly and leaves a durable finish, which is resistant to most solvents. After a thorough sanding, I used a Birchwood Casey stain for a stock finish; though anything from your local hardware store will work, too. After the stock dried, I applied a satin spray on polyurethane to protect the stock.
Other Options If your kids are older and larg-
er, there is no limit to your firearm choices. The Ruger 10/22 is still one of the most popular and versatile. I obtained a Blackhawk Knoxx stock and a Volquartsen carbon fiber bar- rel from Brownells and put them on my old Ruger 10/22. The weight was cut in half and the collapsible stock makes it great for small shooters. What’s more, this combo is supremely accurate. The new AR-style .22s are also making a big hit. Smith & Wes- son’s M&P 15-22 is a .22-LR version of an AR. With an upper and lower receiver made of polymer, it weighs in at a light 5.5 pounds, sports a 16" bar- rel, full-length quad Picatinny rails and removable front and rear sights. It has a 25-round magazine and with the 10-rounder, it is even California legal! This thing is a hoot to shoot, and the older kids (and parents!) real- ly get a kick out of it. (Editor, Sammy,

liked the one he got for his son so much he bought one for himself.) Teaching new shooters isn’t
easy. It takes some level of skill and a lot of patience. If you are in doubt of your abilities or just want to get some more info, there are many resources out there to help you. The NRA is one of the best when it comes to teaching gun safety. From their renowned Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, to their various Youth Programs, they have plenty of options to help you get started. Also, don’t overlook your local shooting range. Most good ranges have programs in place for teaching new shooters. Don’t be afraid to spread the good of shooting sports but, always remember to keep it safe and fun! *
