This summer has been a challenging time for those in the retail trade. With the announcement that the economy expanded by just 0.2% in the second quarter, with consumer spending particularly weak, the riots in our cities could not have come at a worse time. Figures from the Local Data Company, which tracks high streets and retail parks across the UK, showed that more than 48,000 of the 476,000 outlets monitored had been affected either through direct attacks on their premises, or indirectly through lost trade. What is more, two-thirds of the businesses affected were independents, with fewer than five outlets. The government has announced a £20m relief fund to prevent retailers whose stores were destroyed during the riots from going out of business. The priority is to get local communities back on their feet and get businesses up and running again. The Retail Trust are also giving support and allocating grants. For more information visit

In this edition of ToolBUSINESS+HIRE Magazine, Barry Thomas has expressed his concerns for the Tool Industry in the ’Voice of the Industry’ feature. This was written before the August riots. Let’s hope that the events of the past month will make the Government sit up and think about the long-term future of manufacturing and retail in this country.
If your business was affected in any way by the riots, our sympathy goes out to you and we hope you are getting the support you need to compensate for damages to your trade.
Earlier in the month I visited the Manchester area and took the opportunity to visit some of the readers of our magazine. Andrea Dooley of Mossley Home Improvements kindly agreed to fill out our questionnaire for the Talk Shop Feature – read all about it on page 5. We also have an interesting range of Tool Reviews by our Independent Tool Reviewer, Peter Brett. A Telescopic Ladder range from Telesteps, a Disc cutter from Husqvarna, a Diamond Blade from Sankyo, Tile Max bits from ForgeFix and the World’s First Smart Torch, myTorch from NEXTORCH. I hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine and don’t forget to visit our website at
