2010 Margins Allocated to the Members

When you signed up to receive electric service from Lake Region Electric Cooperative, you became a mem- ber and an owner of an electric cooperative. While inves- tor-owned utilities return a portion of their profits back to stockholders, electric cooperatives “allocate” capital credits to their members. Capital credits represent your share of LREC’s operating

margins (operating revenue remaining after operating ex- penses). The amount allocated or earmarked in your name depends on the amount of energy you purchase in a year as it compares to the total energy purchased by all members. The more electricity you buy, the more capital credits you receive.

The 2010 capital credit allocation for your account (the number showing how much Capital Credits were allocat- ed to your account) will be printed on your mid-August or early September electric bill statement. Your 2010 capital credit allocation is added to any total capital credit balance held in your name. The balance in your capital credit ac- count is the sum of all your allocations to date, minus your annual retirements issued to date. Capital credits represent funds that have been invested in the Cooperative’s utility plant. Every year the LREC Board of Directors reviews the financial condition of the coopera- tive and determines the amount of capital credits that are retired and refunded to members without jeopardizing the financial stability of the cooperative. Last December, LREC retired $553,765. This was the balance of the 1980 allo- cation and a portion of the 2009 allocation. Capital cred- its allocated prior to 1980 have already been retired. The December retirement is just a portion of your allocation on your account. Sharing the profits of our business is just an- other benefit of your ownership in a cooperative.
