Letter to the Editor from TEn Saffron’s Keiran Crone wins award

n the June 2011 Market talk I asked the MD of Momentum Broker Solutions the extent to which this new operation might be, “yet another ‘me-too’ broker support and development service.” The answer given to that question has prompted the following response:-

The Appointed Rep model arrived in2005! I

I was interested to read that Howard Pepper of Momentum seems to think that there is a “remarkable absence in the UK of dedicated service provision through an Appointed Representative model” (IP June 2011).

TEn Insurance Services was launched in February 2005 as the first network to operate an Appointed Representative model. A little over six years later, our membership has grown to 60 firms, all of whom are Appointed Representatives and we anticipate signing up at least 10 more start-ups by the end of the year.

More importantly perhaps, we have retained our own independent status and neither own or have any links to any other broking organisation, giving our members the confidence that we really have their interests at heart.

This is what has made TEn the successful Appointed Representative’s network that it is today. We understand what it takes to support our members and we understand that a flexible approach is required to help nurture them and - if the appropriate time comes - help them fly under the strength of their own wings.

Don’t get me wrong - the team at TEn welcomes healthy competition. That’s what makes the UK insurance market so dynamic and fluid.

However I do take exception to someone claiming to offer something unique when in fact they are no more than a copy cat of a highly successful operation.

Yours sincerely Malcolm Lee

Award forKeiran Crone C

ongratulations to Keiran Crone on winning the ‘Employee of the Year’ award at the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Business Awards on 14 May 2011. A member of Saffron Insurance’s

commercial team, he lives in Saffron Walden and joined the East Anglian-based broker in 2007 as a junior commercial account handler. “We’re absolutely delighted - it’s a terrific achievement to win an award against competition from some significant local businesses,” says Saffron MD David Beswick. “It was clear at the beginning of his career that with the right development Keiran would make an excellent addition to the commercial team.” Keiran enjoys working for Saffron. “Each day brings something different. One day you could be dealing with a one-man band liability case, then you could be working on a

self build policy, or a fleet enquiry. There’s lots of diversity. I also get huge amounts of satisfaction when I put on a new business case, and I’m very proud when a customer tells us how much they appreciate our service. Winning this award is fantastic, not just for me but for Saffron too. My colleagues in the commercial team are great and really the award is for all of us.”

Saffron Insurance was founded in 1954 and now has eight branches operating in its locality.

The Editor recalls calling on Saffron Insurance back in the 1970s when toiling as a junior inspector in a triangular ‘manor’ that stretched between Walthamstow and Saffron Walden from a base in Chelmsford. The trip ‘up north’ was very pleasant, but these journeys were only occasional. There was a lot more loyalty around in the era before screen- based rating tables came along. Trying to break the grip held by the more local Cambridge-based composites was hard enough, but especially so for a company based so far away in the deep south (of Essex).
