AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA IN BRIEF
Zip-line first for Victoria Already popular for its 600-metre
BY JULIE BAXTER Set-jetting, cruising, cycling and 'convictourism' will all be emerging trends for Australia in the coming year, according to Austravel. Two high-profile films currently in
production Down Under are Louis de Bernieres’ The Red Dog and The Hunter, starring Sam Neill and Willem Defoe respectively. For film lovers, Austravel is offering related set-spotting packages, like The Hunter package which explores Tasmania from £1,799pp. Australia topped a recent poll of '10
Hot Destinations Which Are Better By Boat', and in anticipation of growing demand for on-the-water holidays, Austravel has introduced five new cruises for 2011, including a four-day Murray River Wetlands Discovery Cruise which costs from £468pp. The operator has added cycle tours out
of Perth, priced from £1195pp, and is also showcasing Australia’s deep-rooted
'convict heritage' for history lovers and culture vultures. Eleven Australian convict sites were recently added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list, and Austravel is predicting a rise in interest for convictourism. The 11 penal sites, which brings the total number of protected ex-jail sites in Australia to 18, are located in Tasmania, Sydney, Fremantle and Norfolk Island.
Austravel is packaging these within new fly-drive tour options. For example, a self- drive tour of New South Wales takes in Government House and Domain, Hyde Park Barracks, Cockatoo Island Convict Site and Old Great North Road. Priced from £1295pp, it includes seven nights’ accommodation, five days’ car hire and return flights to Sydney.
