Campaign Update We're Backing Agents

My Recent Holiday to... The Deep South

Claire Robbins Chew Valley Travel Bristol

We're still going further and giving you more! As part of our ongoing campaign to help travel agents sell more we are excited to announce two new developments. In response to reader demand,

our sister publication Selling Short Breaks & Holidays is to up its frequency and, from next month (April), will be distributed bi-monthly rather than quarterly. Packed with news, views, features, Q&As, offers and practical sales advice, SSBH is the ONLY trade magazine dedicated to helping you sell more short breaks and holidays – so don't miss it! In addition we are delighted to announce that in May we will be launching a new dedicated publication to help you sell more holidays to Canada. Selling Canada is being

produced in partnership with the Canadian Tourism Commission and is set to become THE UK trade reference source for the destination. The first issue will be out just before the spotlight falls on Canada, with the first official visit of Royal newly-weds Prince William and Kate Middleton who are travelling to Canada in June.

My first tip for a US-based driving holiday: a sat nav (GPS) is invaluable in the cities as many of the streets are one- way and you can easily get lost! Going with family tradition, our first

meal in Houston was at the Hard Rock Café! On the road to New Orleans we did a combination of highways and byways so the driving didn't get too boring, and got a glimpse of the Gulf of Mexico, with not a patch of oil in sight. Miles of road has been built up over

the swamps and it was quite surreal driving along amongst the treetops with murky water below. We spent three nights in New Orleans

at the St James Hotel, a building with wrought iron balconies and lots of character close to the French Quarter. On Christmas Day we headed across

Lake Pontchartrain to Fontainebleau State Park to see the silky oaks and sandy beaches. We circled the rest of the lake before heading for plantation country and the levees (or dykes) of the Mississippi River. A Boxing Day trip on the Natchez

steamboat was fab, especially the Cajun lunch and jazz band! Pre-book this excursion as it's very popular. It was on to Tennessee and Memphis

next, a good seven-hour drive. Suyggest clients break the journey for lunch in Jackson. Being so close, we also had to

stop at Graceland, the home of Elvis – it's a time trip back to the 1960s! The road took us across Arkansas,

where we stopped at Hot Springs National Park. The old spa hotels were built right over the springs so a warm bath was very accessible! We spent the next night in Dallas and

Fort Worth, before heading deeper into Texas to the state capital, Austin. This is a small and pleasant city billed as the live music capital of the world. with good museums. An amphibious ‘duck’ tour is a great way to see the city. We conserved the last of our energy for San Marcos, for the biggest outlet mall I have ever seen in the US (and I've seen a few!). For our last two nights we stayed at

the Red Roof Inn, in San Antonio, within easy walking distance of all the sights. We took the Riverwalk boat trip through

Clockwise from left: The riverboat tour in San Antonio; The Alamo; Houston's Space Centre

the centre of town and visited the five original European Missions, including the Alamo. This tour makes for an informative and interesting day. We just about made it back for midnight to see the spectacular New Year's fireworks. On the way to the airport in Houston,

we made a quick trip at the Space Centre's Mission Control, where you can see staff tracking the space station. We drove just over 2,500 miles and I

enjoyed every one of them – even though we narrowly missed a tornado in Arkansas. The hospitality and service along the way was second to none. Top Tip – Don’t pre-book all the hotels as your plans may change, use the internet to book along the way.
