Indonesia looks beyond Bali
International arrivals to Indonesia
rose to seven million in 2010, an increase of over 11 per cent thanks largely to the successful ‘Visit Indonesia Year’ promotion. While Bali is still the most important destination for international tourists, the tourism ministry is highlighting what the other 17,000 islands have to offer and will host ATF 2012 in Manado, North-Sulawesi. Mr Jero Wacik, minister of culture and
Tourism, said: “Indonesia has everything – a magical beach holiday in Bali, astonishing cultural and heritage UNESCO sites and much more.”

NANDITA PATEL PRODUCT EXECUTIVE FUNWAY HOLIDAYS “ATF is a good platform for obtaining tactical offers for inclusion in sales
marketing activities we have planned. In comparison to previous years we found that the discounts and added value offers have become stronger, however the booking periods are shorter and sharper as a result. Last year was challenging for the
Far East, especially as deals and offers available for destinations such as the Middle East, the Caribbean, USA and Mexico were strong. Funway continues to grow in a difficult trading environment, taking market share and building a stronger reputation as experts in the Far East.”
Cambodia interest starts to spread Tourism to Cambodia is spreading
beyond the popular Siem Reap area with operators reporting huge increases in ecotourism and adventure travel in the more remote areas, plus an added interest in the capital Phnom Penh. Areas that used to be dominated by
backpackers are now becoming more popular as connections by plane and road conditions improve. Andrea Loddo, lead, Far East product
manager Hayes & Jarvis: “Phnom Penh is becoming a must-see destination in its own right, thanks to the laid-back atmosphere, cultural interest and trendy bars and restaurants that are opening up almost everywhere in the city. “Beach destinations on the mainland,
such as Sihanoukville, or on secluded islands just off the coast are also very popular at the moment”

more European travellers to travel beyond Siem Reap – a traditionally popular extension from Vietnam – and explore the Cambodian capital. It will also allow local people to reap
some of the benefits of the increase in tourism visitor numbers, he added.

The Asian Travel Fair (ATF) in Cambodia this year enjoyed strong participation from over 430 exhibitors from 10 ASEAN countries, who met over 440 international buyers. This year’s ATF theme was ‘A World of
Wonders and Diversity’, a theme that captures everything Cambodia and the region has to offer tourists, commented So Mara, secretary of state for the
Ministry of Tourism for Cambodia. He told delegates: “ASEAN is one of
the few regions in the world that offers a lot of current tourism value in the international market. Demand for the ASEAN region will continue to grow and we can see that in the increasing interest of international buyers and the proliferation of ASEAN products and services at ATF.”
Interview Karma Resorts
JAMES SULLIVAN- TAILYOUR GROUP SALES & MARKETING KARMA RESORTS
What is your feeling on how the travel industry is doing at the moment in the Far East? The Far East is a strong ‘brand’ . There is always a market, although of course it might move around the region depending on confidence (or lack of) in a particular destination.
What type of person/type of holiday do you feel the Karma brand best suits? Karma Resorts is all about coming together and reconnecting, with the majority of our villas being three and four bedrooms we are ideal for families and groups of friends travelling together. Weddings and celebrations are also a strong reason to come. We offer a relaxed informal atmosphere with something for everyone, the kids’ club, spa, Nammos Beach Club and one of the best-stocked wine cellars in Bali!
How important is the British market for you at the moment? We see the British market as having great potential for further growth. It is one of the markets where couples will travel together and tropical weddings are high on the agenda, particularly for second marriages where there are children from both sets of families. Having a spacious private pool villa with living areas and fully- equipped kitchens is an ideal solution.
What are you doing to increase your awareness among the UK & Irish travel trades? We recently appointed Anand Collection as our UK Representative (07779 109 868) and our flagship property Karma Kandara is a member of Leading Hotels of the World
