W
hen Ocarina Workshop’s David Liggins played an ocarina for the first time,
he was busking his way home from pre-Falklands Argentina. The sweet sound of this tiny clay flute resonated in the paved markets of Santiago, Chile, attracting more interest than the polished tone of his silver Prima Sankyo flute. On returning home in 1980,
David moved from class teacher to entrepreneur as he looked for ways to introduce the English ocarina into the classroom. Why? Because he believed that primary children could get into music more easily with a four-hole ocarina than with any other musical instrument. And so it happened. Children up and down the land now play ocarinas in their class music lessons. Junior ocarina groups won National Festival Outstanding Awards in 1986 and 2005 and years of Ocarina Workshop investment in tooling have resulted in precision plastic ocarinas designed
specifically for schools. In 2008, these were played on Radio 2, 3 and 4, delighting Chris Evans, the BBC Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Today presenters alike. When David and Christa Liggins met with Government ministers in January 2009 to discuss the supply of ocarinas to schools, Ed Balls, then schools minister, enthusiastically waved a yellow ocarina around in the chamber to show what the day’s meeting was about. Now, Ocarina Workshop’s distinctively colourful UK-made “oc” is fulfilling the original dream.
