MIA NEWS an update from your industry trade association xxxx
In it to win it
FIRST THINGS first, let’s give you the details about this year’s Awards event: Wednesday November 30th at
the Marriot Hotel, Grosvenor Square in London. As with all functions, things can never stand still. The MIA Awards is no exception and, following your feedback, we are making some changes for this year’s event. The overall objectives remain straightforward: To host a great evening to celebrate our great industry; To present a range of awards
to recognise the best people, companies and products from the sector; To use the event to raise
monies for our industry charity, Music for All. The general consensus from last year seemed to be that we had just about got the formula right and that we simply need to do more of it (bigger, better etc).

That included the surreal acceptance speech by John McLean that became the talk of the evening. People are still asking if me if it was some sort of staged wind-up.
The 2010 decision to put the “

proceeds from the evening into Music for All seemed well received and we shall stick with this. Every penny the charity raises simply goes into programmes to get more people playing an instrument. For

The use of Music Radar to allow the public to vote on various awards categories generated a whole new level of voting that we had never had before and there seems to be good acceptance of letting the public get involved in voting for our awards. Many of you have said that winning an award that
the public have determined carries more weight and kudos than previous methods. Marketing a winning award also maybe carries more gravitas when the public have decided on the winner. We are still very keen to see swing tags in shops on winning products (think What Hi-Fi Awards) that encourage the customers to
buy with confidence. More on this to follow. Which bring us to voting on the Best Shops. We are looking to see if this can also be arrived at by a public vote this year, including new categories that ensure our ‘not-just Rock’ shops get a look-in as well. It has been great having suppliers voting for the Best Shops over the years, but surely the end users are the real judge of the best shops? We
The MIA’s annual awards have been tweaked with new voting procedures adding greater kudos to the lucky winners….
The MIA awards are changing – but the speeches will hopefully remain as colourful
think this could be done by shops self-nominating with a possible nominal donation to the Music for All charity? We now have a brand new events company called Don’t Panic which is running the Awards with us. We are very excited about this partnership and we see it as an essential part of keeping the evening vibrant, fun and relevant! We are looking to bring more and more sponsors
into the mix (including those outside of MI) in order that the awards grow and gain more and more kudos (and commercial gain) for the winning products and companies. As always, we want to welcome everyone from the industry to the event and are very keen to have thoughts and ideas to take the awards forward. Please send any suggestions to
