The remarkable story of four refugees fleeing Vietnam in 1980 at a time when some 1.5 million Vietnamese made the hazardous journey across the water after the Vietnam War. Set almost entirely in a clothes factory, an incidental event triggers one woman’s memories as she relives the experience of her journey to find a new life in Australia.
Shorts and Panel Discussion: Human Rights Activism and Filmmaking (N/C12+) Refuge England (d. Robert Vas, 1959, 27 mins) Sunday 26 June Glasgow Film Theatre, 3pm Mobile Men (d. Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2008, 3 mins); plus selected short films from Camcorder Guerillas, Digital Desperados and Diversity. The screenings will be followed by
a panel discussion on human rights activism and filmmaking.
Robert Vas’ Refuge England depicts the experience of a Hungarian refugee arriving in 1950s London. Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Mobile Men is a portrait of Jaii, a migrant worker from Burma, in a rare moment of escape from the realities of everyday life. These contrasting films will be followed by selected shorts from local filmmakers working with people seeking asylum, and a panel discussion addressing film and human rights activism.
