Courage
Sixty years ago the UN Refugee Convention was created. It has saved millions of lives since. To mark this vital anniversary, Refugee Week in 2011 has been inspired by the people who have contributed to this country over the last 60 years.
We’re celebrating not only the contribution refugees from all over the world have made to British life, but the courage it takes to seek refuge, to flee from persecution and to rebuild a life in a new country.
There are so many different situations we all face that call for courage, whether they are big dangers we need to overcome or small decisions on a daily basis. They all require some form of courage; to do what we know is right even though it may be hard for us.
You can see some examples of this in our Refugee Week film – created by a group of refugees from all over the world, set to be screened across Scotland from 20 June, World Refugee Day. And many of this year’s events have taken courage as their starting point to explore ideas through poetry, plays, exhibitions, dance pieces and workshops. But no matter where our inspiration comes from, no matter what the event, from football tournaments to film screenings, from comedy nights to street carnivals and cabaret to community events, Refugee Week Scotland is a chance to come together and celebrate.
