THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | MAY 2011 ZIGGI RECADO

Ziggi, how are you? I am OK, busy touring. I’m actually on my way to a show now in Tilburg (Holland) and yes I’m looking forward to it as always. It’s nice to be out there on stage again.

You produced most of your new album - why? When did you decide to be a producer? The main reason is probably cause I wanted to kinda mix it up, you know? I wanted to mix different types of music. I have been influenced by different styles… I don’t know too many producers that do that, so the best way to go about it to me was to do it myself, with my band… Actually I produced a bit from my first album, a few songs together with Rude.

This album is different from the last one - we can hear different influences? I would say that the concept was no boundaries, open for anything. It’s about diversity… In the last decade, the reggae scene has been chang- ing, we don’t see many Jamaican art- ists on the road in Europe – there are mostly European artists with people like you, Alborosie, Gentleman...

Can reggae exist without any Jamaican input? I think it probably could but it wouldn’t be the same you know… I think that it would lose the vibe, the core. I know that you see less and less Jamaican artist up here touring but I think that has to do with a whole bunch of other things. I don’t think there is a good system in place for them to get music out there so you really hear new albums, especially good new albums.

When you go and tour in dif- ferent countries and you play four or five times, after a while you need to come up with some new music, because people are gonna have enough of that you know? You’ve got a few col- laborations on this, how did you choose them? Again just like I told you about the concept that it was like a free thing. I was making music and most of the collaborations were like just natural vibe, just came about when I was recording. I got a couple of Dutch, pretty popular Dutch rappers, I have Pete Philly on it. I worked with him before on one of his projects, I kinda

know him…Especially for a Dutch market he is a very good act, he raps in English so it could fit well with what I did. Maikal X is on the same label as I am so that was kinda of right there… Etana was in Holland for a show, I just got a call and we had an opportunity to do something with her. Again that was a natural thing; there was no thought behind it on my side.

Tell us a bit about the Green Tour? It’s the name of my tour for my new album Ziggi Recado. It’s sponsored by The Bulldog, we are trying to promote environmental awareness. So that’s where the whole Green Tour came about you know… It’s kinda funny people trying to look at it in two ways, where they think ‘Green Tour’ they immediately think ganja especially you know they relate it with Reggae music. Cause we are trying to not use that refer- ence, honestly it is actually illegal in Holland for a Cof- feeshop to promote themself. It’s about trying to tour as green as possible ourselves. Get the people to be aware…I mean it’s such a huge issue for everyone you know. I mean there isn’t much you can do individually but bringing aware- ness when you are somebody in a position where I am with what I do. You know I’m on stage I have a mic so I can speak to people so that’s the way for me to get some attention to it. The Bulldog is a shop in Am- sterdam, and this year it’s their 35th anniversary, for the anniversary it was environmen- tal awareness so that’s where it kinda started initially…

What would you like to say to The Guestlist Network readers? Check out my new stuff man! I’m very proud of my new album, you know, I tried something different, which was kinda risky and new… I’m very pleased you know.
