Are you gigging a lot? Yeah I just finished a tour, I was on touring for six weeks. Non stop. On a Bus. Then I came off tour and I thought, I’ve got some time-off now, but no, now I’ve do an album. Then in between all that I do these club shows.

So when is the album out..tell us about that? My third album, ‘Playing in the Shadows’ is out about Septem- ber. I have got a single out in June called, ‘Change The Way Kissed Me’, and then another single out the end of August.

How’s the album going, who have you worked with? Right I’ve done about nine or ten tracks. I need two or three more. I’ve worked with Skream- he pretty much started Dubstep. Faithless- they’re probably one of the most legendary dance acts of all time.

You went on tour with them, didn’t you? I did go on tour with them!

Is that how you got them on

Currently smashing it in the charts with Wretch 32, with their track Unorthodox. We caught up with rising star Elliot Gleave aka Example and chatted about his new album, big collabs and touring this summer.

the album? Ehm, I think it helped. Our maybe I did the song and then the tour- either way it’s a good story!

It’s kind of a wide spectrum… It’s basically all the biggest people within their scenes. The biggest people from Drum and Bass, the biggest people from Dubstep, the biggest people from Trance and House. You know I do want this album to work around the world, which is something my last album lacked. It didn’t really connect that well around the world.

English rappers haven’t re- ally had huge success in the States? Which is why I’m singing now!

Right OK! Nah I mean, on my first album, I sang once. I sang one chorus on my first album. It was all samples and featured vocalists. On my second album I made more of a transition from Hip Hop to Dance and there was a few featured vocalists but I started singing a lot more, like kick starts was all my

own vocals. Because that single did well, I became more confident with my singing because I only started singing a couple of years ago.

You are going to tour with the album internationally as well? Hopefully, it’s always difficult because what people don’t un- derstand is in the UK I’m quite big now. You I’ve played like twenty festivals, and it’s taken a long time to get there, you know constantly grafting over about six, seven years. In December I’ll be playing some massive venues- which I’m really excited about. But when you talk about the rest of the world; like to go on tour in America can cost you hundreds of thousands of pounds… and no-ones paying for that for me, it’s coming out of my pocket.

What made you do it. How come you thought, I’m just gonna do this? Someone told me I was good.

Oh cool, and you believed them?! Yeah I believed them! But I never

thought I’d have a career in music and then when I got my first radio player on Radio 1 and then I got signed to Mike Skinners (The Streets) label in 2005/6, that gives you a bit of confidence. You think ‘oh maybe I’ve got something but it’s taken me like six, seven years to work out what my niche is if you like. Basically the long-haired, singing, rapping dude form Fulham, who just talks about relationships and partying basically. But I’ve gone through all these different transitions and im- ages and sounds and producers to find that.

What festivals are you going to do, which ones are you most looking forward too? Ehhh, Wireless, main stage. Lovebox. London ones are always good, big crowds… V’s gonna be good. Creamfields, Rockness- because Scottish people are just crazy in general- in a good way! And then the sort of skater-y, stu- denty festivals like Wakestock.

What about fans, have you got any crazy fans? Have I got any crazy fans? Yeah

loads.

What have they done? I wouldn’t say they’re crazy. I suppose they just love you which is a nice thing. I haven’t got any nutters like a nutter would be someone who would send me foot scrapings for instance. But I haven’t had any foot-scrapings, or finger nails, or I’ve had no hair. I’ve had nice things like home pillows, cushions, homemade t-shirts, birthday cakes, Easter eggs, watches, hats. Although I don’t wear hats- don’t buy me hats, don’t buy me hats!

Why not? Because I don’t look good in hats, I’ve got a funny face.

So you’re already thinking about your next album, and you’re not even finished the third one… I already know the concept for the fourth album.

That’s good, thinking ahead. Well I’ve done the personal album, and my second album was a bit disjointed and my first

album was a bit disjointed, it was like Hip Hip, Electro Hop now it’s a bit more Rave-y, Trance-y. Fourth album’s going to be a lot more ‘Rockier’. Let’s just focus on the third album, ‘Playing in the Shadows’.
