ATTACK THE BLOCK

Joe Cornish is better known for making fluffy toy movie spoofs on cult 1990s TV show “The Adam and Joe Show.” Now he’s trying his hand at the real thing. “Attack the Block”, his directorial debut, is a comedy horror alien invasion flick, set in South London’s least exciting area, Oval. Once home to nothing more thrilling than a few googlys in a game of cricket, in “Attack the Block” Oval becomes the scene of an impressively unconvincing alien invasion. The film’s greatest appeal comes from the familiarity of the setting and characters. It’s set in a South London estate that could be any one of the many that litter our fine

city. Whilst the film gently prods us to feel sympathetic towards the protagonists, they are merely a gang of small time criminals who believe themselves to be far more hardcore than they actually are. The unfortunate thing about “Attack The Block” is the fact that it’s neither particularly funny, nor particularly scary. This is a significant handicap for a comic horror. Laugh-out-loud moments are few and far between, and the hairy, fanged alien creatures are too unconvincing to be scary, but not quite unconvincing enough to be genuinely humorous. Still, it’s probably more entertaining than watching cricket.

A fast paced glimpse into the streets of London when a group of young people take on an alien invasion featuring Nick Frost (inset) and Jodie Whittaker from the St Trinians movies.
