SHONKY
How has this year been so far? Everything has been great, I have been really busy with gigs etc. I set up a label with Dyed Soundorom and Dan Ghenacia and I’m also finishing a lot of remixes. It’s very good at the moment, but it’s just complicated because I play at the weekends and I want to be more productive during the week. However come Monday I’m dead, Tuesday I’m still tired and then on Thursday I have to get ready for the weekend again, but I’m not go- ing to complain about it. I love and appreciate what I do.
So tell us a little more about your new label and how it started? We always wanted to do some- thing with Dyed Soundorom and Dan Ghenacia. We are best friends and share the same taste and common interest, the label will allow us to release music by people that we love and we can also release our own music whenever we want. We are all a bit fed up waiting six months or more for an answer from a label or just waiting for the releases to come out. We are currently looking for new music and we will launch at the end of summer. We don’t want to rush the project and get it wrong; we want to do it the right way so if we have to take our time then we will.
Joe le Groove
Parisian producer, DJ and remixer, Shonky has made his mark on the international Electronic music scene. He shared his thoughts on his new label with us and spoke about changing the world.
What kind of music were you into when you were growing up? I was listening to a lot of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and loads of Black Mu- sic; I was less into New Wave and Rock. Though I did get into New Wave and other stuff later but generally I was into Black Music.
Your sound has evolved over the last few years. Is that in line with how the scene was moving or was it your own direction? I’m not going to lie, we are all influenced by the scene and the records we buy. For me it was kind of a natural evolution; I just wanted to do it in my own way. When I started releasing my stuff it was more Minimal Techno but I have a background of Deep House. When I started Djing in 1998 I was playing a lot of Deep House and the scene was very strong with people like Jeff K and Dan Ghenacia, I was really connected with the Deep House scene with music coming from San Francisco. I was connecting with what was going on but I always wanted to add my own “Shonky Touch”. I was inspired by how the scene was evolving and I moved with it. Even if it’s Acid Techno I will put my own touch into it.
You have been living in Berlin for sometime now, why did you want to move from France? I wanted to experiment with something new, I already knew the scene in France for a long time and I knew Berlin was a cool city. It’s a totally different culture in Germany, it would have been a closer culture wise to go to Spain or Italy but I wanted a challenge. I have found my path and a good liv- ing here, it’s perfect for me at the moment. It fits with my lifestyle. The party scene is the best, I have the best record shop. It really fits with the DJ/Producer life style.
Are you still playing Vinyl or are you playing on Traktor or Serato? I’m on Vinyl and I use a few Cd’s playing new stuff from my friends. It’s complicated as I was using Serato but I have gone back to Vi- nyl. I like the way you prepare your sets, I like the way you look for the music and I love going to record shops also. I actually think I play better music now that I’m back on Vinyl or at least I’m playing more of the stuff I really want to play. I don’t listen to promos anymore I’m really into finding rare tracks and playing stuff that most people don’t have. When you eat too much food you don’t want anymore, when you have too much money you don’t appreciate it and the same applies
to music. When you get sent too much music you lose interest in it. I like going out to go and look for my music.
Don’t you think you are miss- ing out on great music which is digital? Yeah probably, but I cannot play everything, there is less choice with Vinyl and in the end it’s easy to focus on the music. There is more poor music on digital format, these days most of the time when people release on vinyl it’s usually of a higher standard.
If you could change three things in the world, what would they be? Firstly I would erase bad music, no more war and religion. Finally I would like to see more happy faces in the world.

This underground party took place in one of East Londons railway tunnels and showcased an intimate night with Nic Fanciulli’s esteemed Saved Records. Italian duo, Italoboyz played a wicked set with residents Krankbrothers in support. As
the The Krankbrothers took one arch and the Italoboyz took the other, the small venue quickly reached full capacity. The amazing Funktion One Soundsystem ensured that the music was on point all night long. This was one wicked party that rocked some of the finest music..we look forward to the next!
