HOW TO SELL PHUKET
attractions have sprung up over recent years. Phuket FantaSea ow (www.
phuket-fantasea.com) is a Las Vegas- style circus spectacle based on traditional Thai myths and set in a small theme park. The town also opened its first water park in January 2010, the state of the art Splash Jungle, part of the West Sands resort. As well as water slides and kids’ activities, the facility has a National Geographic Dive Centre. There is also culture to be found if you
venture past the beaches and bars. Old Phuket Town has some evocative Sino-Portuguese architecture and Wat Chalong and Phuket Temples are as decorous as any outside Bangkok. Also at Chalong is the relatively recent addition of Big Buddha, a 45 metre-high marble statue. The limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay and the Three Beaches hilltop offer the best scenery and panoramas. The international airport serves a
number of domestic and international routes, with over 40 airlines. The airport is around 20 miles from central Phuket, with plentiful taxis and most of the larger hotels running their own shuttle services.
It’s likely that Phuket will never completely shake off its youthful, hedonistic image, so established was it up until the tsunami. However, as more and more international names move in, and with responsible tourism initiatives and work from TAT, a more mature, family and couple-friendly destination emerges.
