FEATURE MEXICO

These flights are helping to re-shape

the image of the destination as people are discovering that it not only offers unique natural, cultural and historical attractions but also a wide range of hotel infrastructure including high-end luxury hotels, restaurants and theme parks. One of our main objectives this year is

promoting the Mundo Maya or Maya World, a joint initiative between the Mexico Tourism Board and the southern states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatan. The aim is to celebrate at the end of 2012 – the date set by the Maya was December 21, 2012 when the solar system ends a cycle of 26 thousand years. Mundo Maya organisers have unveiled a

list of 10 iconic archaeological sites, two sites per region that will spearhead the efforts to attract visitors to the region. In terms of sales advice for agents, we suggest using global brands to connect different regions in Mexico that their clients might not be familiar with. For example, Four Seasons with properties at very different locations – Punta Mita in the Pacific, Mexico City and Riviera Maya in Mayakoba – offer the possibility of exploring three different Mexicos on a single or repeat visit. The same goes for Rosewood which has properties in San Miguel de Allende, Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya.”

Sunvil Traveller “We do more of the interior than coastal

product, with Oaxaca, Palenque and the Yucutan as top destinations. Mexico City is an epic destination and some people will stay up to five nights there to enjoy its museums, galleries and theatres.

MEXICO  Top Selling Tips...

• Flying to Mexico via a choice of European hubs is simple and may be cheaper

• Study all-inclusive options carefully. What’s included and who is the resort aimed at?

• Fly to Cancun for the Mayan ancient sites, but to Mexico City to explore other cultures

• Watch out for major festivals such as Cancun’s Whale Shark Festival (July) and the nationwide Day of the Dead (November 1)

• ATMs are widely available, but also take cash or travellers cheques in US dollars

"Oaxaca is a delightful colonial city with

great churches, charming squares and great cuisine, while Monte Alban the ancient Zapotec capital and a popular visitor attraction is nearby. A 15-night itinerary is about right for Mexico, with plenty to keep visitors occupied, and we do the occasional twinning with Guatemala for those who want to see the ruins at Tikal.”

AMANDA SWEENEY W&O Travel “We’ve seen an increase in requests for self-drive holidays in Mexico and clients are always wanting Mexico City, which unlike Buenos Aires or Rio, is not known

for its trendy nightlife but more for its pre-Aztec ruins at Teotihuacan. There is a fascinating anthropology museum and the beautiful Chapultepec Park. "Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula

remain popular but we are trying to entice people to visit the more authentic Mexico by going North through Copper Canyon to Chihuahua where stays in Haciendas give deeper insight into the rich cultural heritage of Mexico. "Mexico has recently gained a UNESCO designation that its cuisine is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a huge accolade to the people of Mexico who are immensely proud of their food and cultural practices.
