BY PETER ELLEGARD "The 90-minute drive from Kahului through Maui’s ‘upcountry’ to the summit of Maui’s highest peak Haleakala, passes ranch communities where Hawaiian paniolo – cowboys – still ride the range. The region is dotted with flower farms


and botanical gardens as the climate is ideal for exotic flowers and fruits. There are several B&Bs and inns where visitors can stay to enjoy the sweeping vistas and gardens at leisure. The dormant volcano is surrounded by


the Haleakala National Park and the view from the 10,000ft summit is awesome. A precipitous lookout point gives a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the 25-square-mile Haleakala Crater floor. Drive up Haleakala to watch the sunrise,


but beware the many cyclists freewheeling down from the summit after dawn. Pack warm, windproof clothes, especially if you plan to explore one of the hiking trails, as it is often windy and cold on the mountain top. Take food and drink, too. The park has nowhere to buy them."
