CMC Golden State Nationals

Leading all 20 laps of the pair of 10-lap single moto features in the 450F and Open Pro clashes, Tilford was never forced to look back once he snatched the leads in both, leaving the only question to be answered: who’s gonna be second best? Justin Posey, who ventured south for the series capper from Byron, California, had a long drive home with a long face as he twice got snuffed out of bids to take runnerup and had to settle for third in each. It was by his own doing in the 450 event when he tossed his mount to the turf during the first lap while in striking distance of the leader, but could never recover once he got his Yamaha up and going again. This gave Brandon Baker the opening he needed to ride shotgun for the remainder of the race on his Santa Barbara Motorsports Yamaha.

In the Open clash, Posey was just outgunned by

David Meade’s AC Racing/AXO/Hinson/Motion Pro/ Factory Connection Honda for the duration. Even though second place was within his grasp from start to finish, Meade didn’t make a mistake and Posey was frustrated to the end.

Preston Tilford

he weather-delayed finale of the CMC’s 35th Annual Muscle Milk/MTA West Golden State MX Nationals may have been a month later than expected at The Ranch, but it was worth the wait for Preston Tilford, as the Vance & Hines factory-assisted Yamaha ace who has won more Pro events this year than anyone, graduated from the series with two more victories and rode away with two Championships for his resume.

All series long, Damion Tackett has been in a battle with Dillon Epstein for 250F Intermediate and Schoolboy supremacy. So with Epstein absent today, you’d expect Damion, who has dominated the 450F class aboard a Suzuki, to have an easier time in the Lites division where he rides a Kawasaki. Not so. Enter Kevin Weisbruch into the picture. For weeks he has been forced to watch from third the clashes between Tackett and Epstein, but today he had his chance and scored.

While Tacket bagged wins in five of his six motos, claiming sweeps in the 250F and 450F events, it wasn’t

without a struggle. In the first 450, with two laps to go, Tackett fell, giving Weisbruch the lead aboard his Spy/ Wiseco/TAG/661/Gaerne Kawasaki with Cody Baker’s Fox/Shoei/All American KTM hounding him in second. Within a lap, Tackett was back on their tail. Baker momentarily was in the spotlight when he grabbed the lead from Weisbruch, but almost immediately Tackett pounced and jumped from third to first just as the white flag came out and ran away. Baker, with bike problems, slowed giving Weisbruch the second spot. Kevin repeated runnerup in the next round for second. After winning the first Schoolboy, a troubled start in the second moto had Tackett back in third at the end of the first lap with Weisbruch grasping the lead. Tackett’s climb to second was immediate, but a runaway leader was a harder job...still he cut away into the lead, lap after lap. The white came out and Tackett was still three seconds back, but he turned up the wick and charged as hard as he could. After avoiding one near spill, Tackett narrowed to a bike-length as they neared the final turn on the Mark Peters-designed track, a tight right-hander at the base of a steep downhill. Tackett dove to the inside and banged into Weisbruch’s Kawasaki. But it didn’t produce the result he sought...instead of careening into the lead, he stuffed it too hard and went down. Not only had Weisbruch won his first moto of the campaign, he also scored the overall. Revenge was sweet.
