hengdu Shuangliu Airport will host Routes Asia next year and Xiaojun Pan, Chengdu Shuangliu Airport’s chairman, told Routes News in an exclusive interview that he believes that this is the perfect opportunity for delegates to see the strength of the central China market for themselves. He pointed out that KLM has enjoyed such a strong response to its direct flights from Amsterdam to Chengdu that it is now responding by increasing capacity.

“KLM has been operating from Amsterdam with load factors of over 80%. From April it will change aircraft type from a B777 to B747 Combi because the flights to Chengdu are doing so well,” said Xiaojun. “Chengdu is well located in China to reach Europe so developing our European air routes is a key focus,” he said. In addition to increasing European services, the airport wants to develop its domestic and regional network. “We want to be the key western gateway airport in China. To do this we need to build up our network consisting of regional short-haul feeder services and domestic services.” Xiaojun added that the airport’s new passenger terminal will be completed by early 2012, so its infrastructure will be able to accommodate future growth. In terms of Chengdu’s market, Xiaojun explained that the city is the main city in Western China and the economic and financial centre for the region. “In 2009 Chengdu’s GDP ranked 10th among the country’s

19 sub-provincial cities. Its resident population was 13 million in 2009 and its GDP was 450,26 billion yuan. Total imports and exports were $17.86 billion. Chengdu’s IT and electronics industries are quite developed and 141 Fortune 500 companies, including Intel and IBM, Nokia, Microsoft and so on, have invested in factories and offices in Chengdu. There are over 100 global R&D centres. So Chengdu is the first area to develop in the south west of China.”
