UP CLOSE & PERSONAL BY BEN LERWILL “I arrived in Brunei with a number of preconceived ideas about what to expect but none of them involved trekking through a rainforest at daybreak. So when, three days in, I found myself hiking up a shaggy hillside as first light appeared over the jungle, it was a pretty special experience. Brunei’s rainforest is among the most pristine in the region – the majority of it is fully protected by law, and there’s just one lodge for visitors to stay in – so there was nothing contrived about the surroundings. Gibbons called from faraway treetops, hornbills soared overhead, and as the sun finally appeared over the horizon, we arrived at a viewing tower looking out over an endless spread of tropical Borneo. An hour later we were back at the lodge, sipping tea and marvelling at what we’d just experienced. As pre-breakfast walks go, it took some beating.”

NICK GHOSH Southeast Asia specialist, Audley Travel “Brunei is one of those

places that most people have some idea about but rarely visit, but that's part of the appeal of the destination. It appeals to those who are looking to get off the beaten track and experience somewhere a bit different. I don’t yet consider it as a standalone destination, but it works well for three or four nights as part of a longer trip.”

YVETTE FARRER manager, Flight Centre Queensway branch “We sell a lot of Royal

looking for somewhere different.”
