Boston plans a citywide welcome Visitors to Boston this summer will be
able to better plan their time in the city with the help of several new multi- million-dollar tourist information facilities that form part of a new Visitor Welcome Center programme. The $1.5 million renovation of Boston Common Visitor Center – where the Freedom Trail begins – will be completed by midsummer 2011. Until then visitors can pick up maps,
receive tour advice, and get the latest information at the Official Boston Visitor Center, open daily across the street at 151 Tremont Street. Also new is the Emerald Necklace Visitor Center, housed in a beautifully restored granite landmark building on the southern side of the Fenway (opposite Forsythe Street and the Museum of Fine Arts Americas Wing). It provides free maps of the 125-year-
old parks that make up the Necklace and will operate a series of walking tours throughout the summer.
The Boston Harbor Islands Visitor
Pavilion on the Rose Kennedy Greenway at State Street is set to open in June and will provide information and sell ferry tickets to the Islands. Finally, the Bostix Ticket & Visitor Center at Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been renovated. Key Boston attractions include Boston Common (pictured), harbour cruises, tours of the USS Constitution Museum and North End (Little Italy).

West Coast Wi-Fi from Amtrak
Amtrak Cascades, which runs between
Vancouver, British Columbia, and Eugene in Oregon, is the second train in the Amtrak fleet to install a full-train Wi-Fi network. The Amtrak high-speed Acela Express service, which operates between Boston and Washington, DC along the northeast corridor, launched Wi-Fi on all 20 trains in March 2010. Using any laptop computer or Wi-Fi enabled device, Amtrak Cascades will now be able to connect to the Internet. The free Wi-Fi service, known as AmtrakConnect, will also allow passengers to access corporate networks
through most standard Virtual Private Networks (VPN). More than 838,000 travellers rode Amtrak Cascades in 2010 setting a 16-year high for total ridership. Wi-Fi service has been the most
requested amenity by Amtrak Cascades passengers and more people are travelling on the trains with their Wi-Fi enabled devices. Wi-Fi service on Amtrak Cascades trains are free of charge during the introductory period, after which the policy will be reviewed based on customer demand and system performance.
