he growth in tram travel is continu- ing after plans for ten new trams in London were announced.


Transport for London (TfL) wants the new trams to increase the frequency of services in Croydon. Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London’s transport advisor, said: “Ever in- creasing numbers are using the trams and this will help improve their access to jobs, education and leisure facilities in the south of the capital.”


Chief operating officer for TfL London Rail, Howard Smith, added: “With the number of journeys increasing by 45% since it opened in 2000, we want to respond to the demand and ensure London Tramlink con- tinues to provide people in south London

with a comfortable and efficient means of getting around.”


Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, add- ed: “The new trams will be a real win for local people living or working in Croydon, Wimbledon, Beckenham and New Adding- ton.”


The London Borough of Croydon will con- tribute £3m to the cost of leasing the new trams.


The invitation to submit proposals to sup- ply the new trams has been issued in the Official Journal of the European Union. Bidding closed on March 14. It is hoped the trams will be delivered before the end of summer 2011.


ombardier has announced that it is making more trains per week at its Derby site than ever before.

The company said in a statement: “By the end of this month, over 100 cars will have been produced by the site. If all these cars were placed nose to tail the trains would cover a distance of 2km.”


The site is producing MOVIA metro cars for the Victoria and Sub-Surface Lines, Class 379 Electrostars for National Express

is being installed along the Abbey Line be- tween Watford Junction and St Albans.


The £300,000 investment in the route has been funded by rail operator London Mid- land as part of the Quality Rail Partner- ship the company has with Hertfordshire County Council.


The train operator and council, together with the Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership, have already paid for new waiting shelters, signage, poster cases and improved accessibility along the line. St Albans Abbey station has been modernised and work begins this year to improve facili- ties at the Watford end of the line.
