February performance hits record high

Network Rail has announced record punctuality figures for February of 92.4%, an increase of 0.6% on the same period last year.

Director of operations and cus- tomer services Robin Gisby said: “Trains on time are what matter most to passengers, train opera- tors and Network Rail. This is the good service we must deliver, day in, day out. Network Rail still has areas to improve, particularly for

operators who use the East Coast Main Line.

“While there has been an improve- ment in performance compared to last month, there is still some way to go to reach the high standards we set for ourselves and which our customers rightly expect.”

More than half of operators saw their figures improve, with c2c top of the list recording 96.5% punc- tuality on its trains.

No resolution to tram dispute

Work on Edinburgh’s ill-fated tram system remains at a virtual stand- still as rows between the contrac- tor, tram company and politicians continue.

Talks have been taking place to try to resolve the dispute be- tween Tie and Bilfinger Berger over the £545m project, but there was no notable progress as RTM went to press.

Chief executive of Edinburgh City Council Sue Bruce said: “I believe everyone involved in the tram project, as well as the people liv- ing and working in Edinburgh, has a vested interest in the outcome of the mediation process.

“We all want to see the project continue as quickly as possible and get trams running in the city, however it is crucial that those in- volved are given the opportunity to work to find a solution for go- ing forward.”

It is thought part of the project may be abandoned for the fore- seeable future, with the route end- ing up eight stops and 4km short- er than first planned. The Scottish Government has capped its in- vestment in the project at £500m, with the city council paying the remainder. But if the project is not completed, Transport Scotland may demand repayment, it has been reported.
