The UK Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) is focusing in 2011 on increasing the awareness of the entire rail industry about the use of trenchless systems.


These systems or methods are available for a wide range of works, including new installations as well as operational maintenance, but are often not properly appreciated and regularly approached with woefully out of date knowledge and/or an unawareness of mod- ern capabilities, according to the UKSTT.


Strategic decisions need to be made from a well-informed knowl- edge base, it says.


UKSTT, formed in 1993 for the promotion of the use and aware- ness of trenchless systems, ma- terial and techniques, offers road shows, seminars, a biennial ‘No Dig Live’ conference and exhibi- tion, as well as a programme of undergraduate and postgraduate lectures to universities throughout the UK.


The society members have jointly written and developed a suite of City & Guilds accredited training courses to cover a wide range of new installation and repair tech- niques, believing that quality of training is essential to achieve ex-

Atkins lands New Street contract


Atkins has been awarded a con- tract to design, supply, install, test and commission the station infor- mation and security systems at Birmingham New Street station.

Already underway, this extensive project covers the delivery of the telecoms systems, which in- cludes data infrastructure, CCTV, business, operational and fire telephone systems, control room furniture and equipment and cus- tomer information and access control systems.


The works will include the re-loca- tion and re-commissioning of ex- isting telecoms systems.

will be completely replaced on a phased basis so the station re- mains fully operational throughout works.


Atkins’ operations manager Matt Wickham said: “This contract is an important addition to our grow- ing portfolio of comms work with TfL/LU and Network Rail, and is our first major project away from our traditional London market.”


It is also lead consultant for the multidisciplinary design work for the £600m redevelopment scheme.
