News Industry Call for support for manufacturers
Robin Phillips, financial director at Siemens Industry UK, has called on the Government to con- tinue its commitment to the revival of UK manufacturing. Speaking at the annual Siemens Process Automation User Conference in York, Phillips urged the coalition Government to continue the previous political administration’s objective of ‘rebalancing’ the UK economy. Phillips said initiatives such as the Manufacturing Strategy need to be reinforced and encouraged, but warned of many challenges affecting UK manufacturers. They include the need to address a
potential shortage of engineers which could be helped by deliver- ing 600,000 engineering appren- ticeships over the next 10 years. He added: “Continued invest- ment levels are vital for research and development initiatives and hi-tech manufacturing processes. Government grants and the new Technical Innovation Centres are a good start, but the green indus- tries need to be supported. Finally, Phillips called upon the UK banking sector to get behind its manufacturing coun- terparts to support the new and growing innovative companies.
