Hörmann has completed the installation of 56 loading bays at The Co-operative Group’s new regional distribution centre (RDC) at Newhouse, Glasgow. Working alongside the main contractor, Winvic, Hörmann has installed dock levellers, angled loading houses, dock seals, chiller and ambient sectional doors, steels doors, fire exit doors and LED dock lights

he Co-operative Group’s logistics business is undergoing a major transformation, and following the acquisition of Somerfield last


year, and the need to increase capacity for future business growth, the devel- opment of a composite RDC on the central belt of Scotland was a priority. The new site meets the exacting safety standards you would expect from a major retailer and is designed to maximise efficiency of operation. The choice of Hörmann loading bay equip- ment is also said to help reduce envi- ronmental impact through the longer service life gained from the attention to detail and high quality engineering applied to each component. As well as the input into the original design Hörmann project engineers work on site improving direct commu- nication and ensuring building work progresses effectively and efficiently. For this development the majority of the dock levellers feature swing lips. Hörmann gives an especially stable lip hinge through its orthotropic design. This design includes 150mm support- ing hinge strips made from the same high grade steel as the lip itself. The open design of this hinge also prevents clogging with dirt or debris. Two bays have dock levellers with telescopic lips to accommodate non- standard vehicles. As with the swing lips, the longevity and reliability of operation are delivered through high quality engineering that has interlock- ing platform and telescopic lip beams. The front edge of the lip is fully rein- forced and is especially stable due to the interlocking design. With the level of attention given to the leading edge of the dock levellers it

is no surprise that each dock leveller leaves the factory pre-cabled with cable harness ready to connect the control system. Fully integrated con- trol panels on each bay add to the effi- ciency and safety of operation. Hörmann’s hydraulic system with two lifting cylinders and an independent third cylinder to operate the lip (whether swing or telescopic), also enhances safety. Both lifting cylinders are fitted with automatic emergency stop valves, that can lock the platform instantly, critical if a truck were to depart prematurely. With safety at the fore-front of the design and operation demanded by The Co-operative Group, the sectional doors chosen for both the ambient and chilled loading areas also benefit from patented safety features.


As with all Hörmann products these doors conform to the highest European standard, 13241-1, and include two unique safety devices. These are a load-dependent latch in the load car- rier that operates in the unlikely event of a cable or spring breaking and a spring safety device. This second fea- ture stops the torsion spring shaft in the event of spring failure and holds the door securely in position. Adding to the safety features of

these doors the guide rollers are in special safety tracks, developed by Hörmann, to ensure that the door is securely held at all times, while the design of the torsion spring assembly, with a grooved shaft, results in a per- fectly counterbalanced door, adding to both safety and operational longevity. Further designed in safety features include specially shaped door sections that eliminate ‘finger trap zones’ on the inside and outside of the door and internally guided cables so there are no protruding parts. The side frames of the door are also completely closed resulting in a secure side trap guard. Insulated, double skinned, steel faced doors with HCFC free rigid foam infill meet the thermal requirements demanded and also deliver the level of rigidity and robustness needed to ensure efficient long term operation. On the ambient sections SPU 40 doors have been selected, with 42mm thick infill and double glazed viewing windows maintaining the levels of thermal efficiency and allowing nat- ural light into the building.

On the chilled section double insu- lated DPU doors have been selected. Double seals at the lintel and floor effectively reduce energy losses while the steel sections have thermal breaks on the interior and exterior. To maintain the high levels of insu- lation while bringing more natural light into the cold store, triple glazed vision panels have been chosen. Double and quadruple glazed options are also available depending on the level of insulation needed. Patented, Duratec, scratch resistant glazing, ther- mal breaks and GRP reinforced spacers ensure the required level of thermal efficiency is maintained whichever version is selected. To maximise space utilisation and loading efficiency of the original building design Hörmann proposed the installation of three angled loading houses, improving access to these three bays. Additionally the selection of LED internal trailer illumination lights is not only more energy efficient but due to the longevity and the vast array of lights means that a single bulb failure doesn’t compromise safety.
