Spirax Sarco flash steam
recovery scheme cuts boiler costs at British Bakels
B
ritish Bakels has knocked almost 6.5% off the combined cost of energy and water to its boiler, thanks to a flash steam recovery system designed and supplied by Spirax Sarco. The system recovers the flash steam generated by blowdown from the main boiler at the company’s site in Bicester. Blowdown is an essential process in which water is periodically discharged from a steam boiler to prevent contamination from building up within the system. Bakels had already minimised the amount of water released during blowdown by adopting an automated system from Spirax Sarco, which monitors the build up of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the boiler. But any flash steam generated during the process was being discharged, rather than recycled. The local Spirax Sarco engineer spotted an opportunity to recover this lost energy. British Bakels manufactures an extensive range of high quality dry and wet baking ingredients at the 5.5-acre site in Bicester.

convenient, Megger’s new and innovative MFT1700 series instruments set new standards for multifunction test sets. The range includes three models, all of which share the same lightweight yet robust IP54 construction, large backlit display panels and timesaving features like two-wire non-trip loop testing, auto-start continuity testing and optional pass/fail RCD testing. All models in the new range have a CAT IV 300 V safety rating in line with BS EN 61010, which makes them safe to use on all areas of low voltage electrical installations. This makes it unnecessary to carry out time-consuming risk assessments to decide which instruments can be used in particular locations. As well as the functions needed to test electrical installations in line with the 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, high-end models in the range provide useful additional functionality. This includes facilities for checking phase rotation and testing three-phase RCDs and for measuring earth electrode resistance, something that is a common requirement in solar and other types of renewable energy installations.

Leading valve manufacturer upgrades production with Hodge Clemco self-contained blast room
O
liver Twinsafe, a leading UK manufacturer of specialist pipeline valves, has upgraded its production facilities with the installation of a self-contained Enviraclean blast room with abrasive recovery system and high-performance sound insulation from Sheffield-based Hodge Clemco. Oliver Twinsafe valves are designed to provide double- block and bleed capabilities in a compact design, typically providing the same capability as standard valves that require twice the space. They are highly regarded for their quality and reliability in extreme conditions and have to meet stringent industry standards, including
testing up to 10,000psi. For many years surface preparation for the final paint finishes was carried out by sub-contractors off site, which required extra handling of the valves, some weighing five tonnes. The Enviraclean chamber measures four metres long x three metres wide x 2.5 metres high and has double access doors at one end to allow large components to be accommodated.

industries with around 1,000 electrical accidents at work each year and as many as 25 people dying from their injuries.. The outcome of an arc flash can be disastrous and whilst legislation requires businesses to perform risk assessments for all work activities, this is often overlooked because most people are unsure how to assess and manage this hazard effectively. DuPont Personal Protection
The DuPont™ Arc-Guide E
has developed the DuPont™ Arc-Guide in conjunction with independent experts, to help companies comply with the law and better assess the arc flash hazards (with the use of simple calculators). It provides them with the knowledge on how to both reduce the severity and consequences of an arc flash for workers who operate in proximity to, or on, energised electrical equipment and cables. It is widely recognised the higher the voltage of an electrical power system, the greater the risk for people working on or near energised conductors and equipment. However, arc flash can actually be worse and more common at lower voltages and can cause devastating, severe burn injury and even death.

Wide range of accelerometer calibration solutions
CB Piezotronics, a world leader in vibration, acoustic, pressure, force and torque sensors, offers a wide range of accelerometer calibration solutions encompassing handheld, portable and workstation models. Model 394C06 is a small, self-contained handheld shaker designed for the rapid checking of accelerometers,
P vibration monitoring systems and recording systems. It
provides a known, controlled vibration for verification of accelerometers weighing up to 210 grams. Model 394C06 is battery-powered and provides 80 to 1600 calibration cycles depending on accelerometer weight. Operating at 159.2Hz, the model 394C06 features automatic shut-off after a 1.75 minute cycle with manual override switch for continuous operation while the internal suspension is protected from overload by mechanical stops. Ideal for pre- and post-test verification of accelerometers, the model 394C06 features switchable RMS or 1g peak acceleration output and is fully CE compliant. A metric version giving output of 10m/s² is also available. Model K9100C is a portable vibration calibrator that enables production of NIST traceable vibration sensor calibration reports complying with ISO 17025/A2LA requirements.
