Luge Team Takes Bronze, Silver and Lead

When U.S. luge Olympians Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin raced down the track fast enough to earn the bronze medal in 1998 and the silver medal in 2002, they did so with the help of casting stowaways. Luge ath- letes are allowed to supplement their body weight with a weighted vest, and Grimmette and Martin added the pounds by incorporating small lead weights provided by metalcaster Vulcan GMS Inc., Milwaukee, into their racing suits. Vulcan, which has been a sponsor of the U.S.A. Luge Team since 1990, also provides lead weights used in the sleds for balance.

“It’s meaningful for us to have sponsors who share our passion for the sport,” Grimmette said. “But in addition to financial support, Vulcan also helps us develop the best equipment to compete with. That’s a contribution on another level.”
