Michael Gwyn, Advanced Technol- ogy Institute, North Charleston, S.C. World-renowned casting design expert Mike Gwyn, who has spoken to designers and buyers from indus- tries as diverse as military, automo-

tive, railroad and construction, will provide an innovative, conceptual approach to the design of metal cast- ings. Designers and buyers will learn the importance of alloy selection and how it impacts the design boundaries

of a casting. The session also exam- ines a systems approach to casting design that can be applied with new designs or conversions to castings. This presentation also will review the correlation between costing processes and the design of the casting.

Examining the Validity of Integrally

Cast Sample Bars (11-015) Bob Puhakka, Alloy Casting Indus-

tries, New Hamburg, Ontario, Canada; Jianzheng Guo, ESI US R&D, Columbia, Md.; Sam Scott, Adi Sholapurwalla, ESI North America, Farmington Hills, Mich.

During the casting component

procurement process, the customer will typically add the provision to integrally cast sample bars with the part in order to validate the alloy composition and material properties. While the notion that a sample bar connected to the casting should have properties like the casting seems s logical, the test sample may actually not represent the casting at all. The filling of the test piece, solidification pattern, section thickness and other factors may produce a sample which is completely unique from the casting and, therefore, not representative of the final casting properties. This variation between sample and casting will be examined in this discussion using metallurgical tests of industrial cases supported by casting simula- tion.

Quality Assurance with Process Com- pensated Resonant Testing (11-036) Robert Nath, Magnaflux Quasar, Al-

buquerque, N.M.; Clifford Grupke, Self Employed, Canton, Mich.; Lem Hunter, Greg Weaver, Vibrant Corporation, Al- buquerque, N.M.; Charles Leonard, Di- versified Machine Inc., Montague, Mich.

An advanced resonant testing tech- nique has been used to test millions of parts and achieve near-zero failures. The concept relies on the quality as- surance program defining as “accept- able” those parts that are structurally
