A drama out of a crisis
The Health and Safety ‘11 – South exhibition was held at Sandown Park Racecourse on 1-2 March 2011. Something different for this year was the drama based presentation entitled ‘Safety Leadership and Culture’. The session was interactive, practical and effective and the organisers of the presentation say their style of programmes effect a long-term change in attitude – not just a short term change in behaviour - and help to build lasting positive cultural change. The seminar was delivered by Shaun Curry and Harry Gallagher of Macnaughton McGregor. Between them they have almost 30 years’ experience of developing and delivering interactive drama based attitudinal safety training. During this time they have developed training programmes for some of the world’s leading companies including ConocoPhillips, Shell, Rolls Royce, Carillion and Rio Tinto Alcan as well as many others. They have developed and delivered programmes all over the world from Borneo to Trinidad, Kazakhstan to the Middle East, and the USA to Norway. Their approach can distil the central message of the event and raise attendees’
awareness of the salient issues in an interactive, thought provoking, enjoyable and ultimately memorable way. As always, the conference and seminar programme, which included sessions organised by the event’s official educational partner the British Safety Council, was a valuable source of information for the health and safety professional and a popular attraction for visitors to the event.
Although the drama dealt with some of the issues faced by supervisors and front- line managers, the wider context was aimed at anyone looking for effective training techniques in order to make a long lasting, positive impact upon the safety culture of their organisation.
A key feature of the seminar was the ‘Interactive Case Study’ which demonstrated for front-line managers and supervisors how to present a positive and unambiguous safety message to the workforce in situations of deadlines and stress. The case study was set in a chemical plant and the central themes of tight deadlines, mis-communication and work pressure were readily recognised.
Shaun Curry from Macnaughton McGregor said of the seminar: “The central message of behavioural based safety is very simple – ‘let’s all be safe and look out for each other’. So why can it be so hard to get right? We hope to raise participants’ awareness of the kinds of training tools available to them in the area of behavioural based safety. Tools that will increase ownership and promote long lasting positive attitudinal change. We also hope that people took away an enjoyable and memorable experience.”
Along with event partners 3M, Ansell, Arco and DuPont, Health and Safety ’11 – South was supported by the British Safety Council and Safety Groups UK and officially endorsed by the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM).

Bbi board members pass IOSH exam with flying colours
Beacons Business Interiors (Bbi), the facilities support specialist, has announced that its entire board of directors have successfully completed the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) ‘Safety for Senior Executives’ course. Six candidates successfully took part in the course, delivered by Santia, which aims to equip senior executives with an in- depth understanding of the role of health and safety in the construction industry. Throughout the day candidates were required to demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities in both practical and
theoretical examinations. The course sought to inform board members of their legal responsibilities in terms of health and safety and how to put effective strategies in place.
Areas also covered included how to minimise risk in the workplace, the consequences of failing to manage health and safety effectively, and the principles of continual improvement and annual reporting.
Jeff Lee, compliance officer for Bbi, said: “I am really pleased that all of our board members have taken part in this course and have passed with flying colours! It is a challenging course that requires knowledge of a multitude of different areas relating to health and safety.
“At the end of the course

their knowledge of health and safety and their ability to recognise and control hazards in the workplace. Board members are now able to put into practice the strategies learnt during the course, improving the way health and safety is managed within the business.” Andy Graham, group chairman of Bbi, explained: “I am very proud to be able to say that all our board members have successfully completed the course. The completion of this training is a great achievement and clearly demonstrates Bbi’s ongoing commitment to health and safety management.
“Health and safety is an integral part of the ethos of Bbi, and I feel that having all our board members pass the IOSH ‘Safety for Senior Executives’ course sets the benchmark for businesses of our size, putting us one step ahead of our competitors.
“By encouraging and facilitating good practices and expertise, we aim to promote awareness of health and safety matters in the workplace and ensure that high standards are achieved, and maintained.”
